Refresher

Okay, I have searched high and low, read til my eyes bleed (or at least thats what they looked to me), so i was wondering if some of you can help me along my journey here.

First I understand most of the methods of growing mushrooms, however I am looking for pure "from scratch" methods... so i was wondering

1) is there a document to help me make my own spawn? because i am confused, please help.

Thank you much,
nug

oh wait! lemme get this straight --- you make a mini culture by doing the agar and whatnot, then later transfer it to a grain (or your choice of larger medium) and let it grow from there?

sorry i was getting confused, am i clear yet?

is it possible to use agar media without petri dishes? I've been finding myself drawn to the vegetable aisle at the super market, and eying the oysters alot these days?

I am thinking about using 1/2 pint wide mouths to clone and then transfer to pressure cooked WBS.

good idea? or should I just buy some petris??

Yep. I prefer to use jars that have a narrower mouth though like 8 ounce mayo jars or mustard jars. Wide mouth jars increase the area that contaminates can enter. Wide mouth jars are easier to move a scalpel around in though.

You can mix up your agar in a pot and then put it in the jars and sterilize the agar in the jars. 20 to 25 minutes is good. You eliminate the need to pour plates this way. You don't have to tape the sides of jars with parafilm.

You should vent the jars. Put a polyfill plug in a hole in the lid or tape some tyvek over a hole in the lid.
