You are your persona
    #4579434 - 08/25/05 01:35 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I hear it said that, so and so is not this or that, that's just a persona. I say bull. What you say and do is what you are, just as much as any "real" self underneath. If you pretend to be a certain way, it's because you aren't pretending at all. That's the most prominent part of your personality structure right now. :mushroom2:

I'd agree that what ever persona you can take on is the result of your past experiences. You need something to draw from to create it or become it. I would add that people can have many persona's or faces and be very multifaceted.

Say you experience the persona of someone being jerky. That doesn't mean that is their one and only persona. They may also at times move into very considerate ones.

We make the costumes we wear. They are a part of us who we are or can be in that sense. I think a lot of people have a closet full of them and some just stay using the same one or two.

All of the persona's I create into experience are a part of the whole of me, yet no one persona is the whole of me is how I see it.

Right. To own that is to be real. To love that is to be realized.

Say some one is being jerky as a driver in morning rush hour traffic.

Then is being smart and sharp during the morning office meeting.

Then is being dumb and awkward about how he organizes his desk.

Then is being silly when he talks to his 2 year old son on the phone during lunch.

Then is being considerate when he stays late to help out a co-worker.

Then is sweet and loving to his wife later on that evening.

This guys used many persona's throughout the day. They are all facets of who he has been is and can be.

No one of them makes up the totality of him.

I do not entirely agree with Existentialism. I do not think we are responsible for EVERY action. Sometimes our brain acts very robotically, without consulting our frontal lobe. Crimes of passion, reflex reactions, etc. 'You' = Your frontal lobe. The rest of the brain appears to just be machinery.
But, I love the idea that existence precedes essence. Things just 'are' and we, sometimes collectively and sometimes individually, determine what they mean.

You think so? So before the frontal lobe developed we were just machines? How could a "You" develope from a machine?

"The overriding characteristics of R-complex behaviors are that they are automatic...Because the limbic system links emotions with behavior, it serves to inhibit the R-complex and its preference for ritualistic, habitual ways of responding...The neocortex makes language, including speech and writing possible. It renders logical and formal operational thinking possible..."

So when Anthony Hopkins, the actor, plays a cannibal, that is a hidden part that already exists within him? And when a politician smiles while lying, he is showing his authentic, loving, compassionate side? In essence, it appears that you are saying that pretense doesn't exist.

Evolution.
Look at insects. They appear to just be complex biological machinery.

Sort of. I'm saying what Mush said. I'm talking about how one plays in the social world. One acts in some fasion and then when called on it says, well I'm really not that way at all. I'm saying they certainly are that way and the more they act that way the more that is a main component of how they really are inside. An actor is being paid and so plays a part for other reasons then being himself. But a case could possibly be made for that by saying what jiggy is talking about. But I'm not really talking about that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_regions_in_the_human_brain

You referred to the frontal lobe. There is much more to the brain than the frontal lobe and the brain stem.

The R, or Reptilian, portion of the brain is the brainstem, responsible for basic "robotic" functions and the fight-or-flight response.

An actor is being paid and so plays a part for other reasons

What you say and do is what you are...

Unless money is involved? That is the only exception?

What if a job is involved? What if survival is involved? What if friendship, love, sex, or a myriad of other motivating factors is involved? Then that is the real you, but coin overrides all?

Swami can no grok IceTea's premise.

If Anthony Hopkins actually ate someone, it would be valid to labal him a cannibal. If Anthony Hopkins acts like a cannibal, then we label him an actor.

And if someone merely acts angry, how do you distinguish that from "real" anger?
