panelle mushrooms/oyster mushrooms
    #4576186 - 08/24/05 07:11 PM (18 years, 5 months ago)

Has anybody heard of a panelle mushroom? My father used to refer to them and pick them, delicious. They look like oyster mushrooms, white, fan shaped and are growing on stump in woods in my backyard- I live in Georgia, any help would be appreciated.

The only thing that comes to mind would be paxillus...
but I don't know of any that are edible, the only ones that I can think of are, actually, poisonous.

Maybe Pleurocybella porrigens?

If it is, you should know that it is/was suspected of causing an outbreak of poisonings in Japan some year ago. I don't know whether it since has been confirmed or dismissed as being the cause.

How about Panellus serotinus, the late oyster mushroom? But I guess those are not really white.
