Not all of it is that bad. The stuff that looks like a doormat is what you want to avoid. The stuff that looks like white pudding will pin. This is for those of us who are to lazy to patch.
turns to then to
I'm not saying it's a good thing, but a lot of people overly panic over it.

Is strait cased grains typically all you work with, Magash? Do you find that to be the most efficient?

Naw, bulk teks are. I have no need for that many shrooms so it's grains nowadays

A agree, and would like to add this: Overlay with P.cubensis is not such a big deal, because P. cubensis grows perfectly well also from uncased substrates(pf cakes, straw and others). Thus it doesn't necessarily need a casing layer, although it benefits greatly from one.
If overlay happens with a mushroom which requires a casing layer( Agaricus species for instance) the effect on the yield is much more dramatic.

i don't really understand the mechanics of why an even pinset should affect yield so much? can anyone explain why it would?

If your myc breaks thru early in spots those are usually the first to produce pins, they get a head start producing a few early volunteers, this will be your first flush, the rest of the pins will not flush until these early volunteers have been harvested. Now If you patch these areas then all the myc will reach the surface more or less at the same time and pin at the same time resulting in a higher number of pins competing for the first flush (higher yield). Heres the thing thin casings and aggresive myc will not benefit from patching that much IME. Also overall the casings nutes will produce a certain amount of shrooms overall so totally the weight produced from a casing technically should be equal in the end with all flushes combined but this is not the fact, the fact is casings get contams they also vary in environment conditions so our job IMHO is to get the best pin counts out ASAP. Not all casings will produce the same but the more experienced we get at optimizing our conditions the more consistant our flushes will become. GL and hope this helps

I used a closet once setup a nice little lab trouble was all the shit that was in there ended up in the bedroom that pissed off the GF then I ended up dumping her as she was getting in the way of my sterile culture technique! Ya I got priorities too!!!"
