'Peace Mom' Returns to Texas War Protest
    #4576001 - 08/24/05 06:27 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

The press will now try to revive the story... we will see if it can be resurrected..........

'Peace Mom' Returns to Texas War Protest By ANGELA K. BROWN,

Associated Press Writer

CRAWFORD, Texas - A woman whose son was killed in Iraq returned to Texas Wednesday to resume her anti-war protest near President Bush's ranch after a weeklong absence to care for her ailing mother.

About a dozen protesters who have continued the peace vigil picked up Cindy Sheehan at the Waco airport Wednesday afternoon, six days after she flew to Los Angeles when her 74-year-old mother suffered a stroke.

"This is where I belong, until Aug. 31, like I told the president," Sheehan said at the airport before driving about 20 miles to the Crawford site.

Sheehan began her vigil Aug. 6 on the road leading to Bush's ranch, vowing to stay through his monthlong vacation unless he met with her. Her 24-year-old son, Army Spc. Casey Sheehan, was killed last year in Iraq.

Sheehan's protest has encouraged anti-war activists to join her and prompted peace vigils nationwide. She also continues to draw harsh criticism.

Conservative activists and military families were en route to Crawford from California on a tour called "You don't speak for me, Cindy!" The caravan coordinated by Move America Forward plans to hold a pro-Bush rally in town Saturday.

Among those defending Sheehan are former U.S. ambassador Joseph Wilson, who believes that his wife's identity as an undercover CIA operative was leaked in retaliation for his criticism of the Bush administration in a 2002 New York Times op-ed piece.

"The Bush White House and its right-wing allies are responding to Cindy Sheehan and the military families' vigil in central Texas in the same way that they always respond to bad news ? by unleashing personal attacks and smears against her," Wilson said in a statement released Wednesday.

Later Wednesday, Bush was to return to Texas after a three-day trip to Idaho, where he met with some military families and gave speeches to rally support for the war. He said Tuesday that he recognizes Sheehan's right to protest and understands her anguish, although she does not represent the views of many families he has met with.

Sheehan and other grieving families met with Bush about two months after her son died last year, before reports of faulty prewar intelligence surfaced and caused her to become a vocal opponent of the war.

Sheehan now looks to take on Congress

Iraq war protester says she'll start with Texas Republican Tom DeLay

Quote:

CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) -- Iraq war protester Cindy Sheehan said Friday she plans to expand her focus to Congress, starting with House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, a Bush ally and fellow Texan.

Sheehan has been camped outside the president's Crawford, Texas, ranch this month, seeking a meeting with him to discuss the U.S. presence in Iraq, where her son was killed in 2004.

She plans to begin a bus tour on Thursday to the White House to campaign for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

One of DeLay's Texas district offices, near Houston, would likely be the first stop, she said. That is about a five-and-a-half hour drive from Bush's ranch, near Waco, where he is on a month-long vacation.

"I think our first stop might be Tom DeLay's office," she said, surrounded by supporters. "I just wanted to let him know, so he'll be in his office when we get there."

"The president is not going to meet with us, probably," Sheehan said. "We the people need to influence our congressional representatives, and I hear he's pretty close by," she added, referring to DeLay.

A spokeswoman for DeLay said his schedule was already set and did not plan to change it to meet with Sheehan.

"Mr. DeLay disagrees with those who believe we should give the terrorists the timeline they want and simply cut and run from the war in Iraq," said DeLay spokeswoman Shannon Flaherty.

Sheehan met once with Bush after her son, Casey, was killed but has sought a second meeting to ask the president to explain why he believes the 24-year-old Army specialist died for a "noble cause."

Almost 1,900 U.S. troops have been killed in the conflict.

Bush has said he sympathizes with Sheehan, as well as with the families of all the soldiers who have died. But he has staunchly defended his actions in Iraq and has said leaving now would lead to greater dangers for the United States and Iraq.

A Gallup poll released on Friday showed Bush's job approval rating among Americans had slipped to the lowest point of his administration, with 40 percent of the poll's 1,007 adult respondents, supporting his performance and 56 percent disapproving.

Bush's previous low was 44 percent, one month ago.

The latest survey, conducted this week, noted a drop in support among independents and confirmed the findings of other recent polls, which showed Bush's approval rating even lower.

Compared with other post-World War II presidents at this point in their second term, only Richard Nixon had a lower job approval rating and he was in the midst of the Watergate scandal, Gallup said. The others were all above 50 percent.

Now she is going to harass Congressmen. Pulling out of Iraq, right now, would be a huge mistake.

The people in that photograph should be ashamed of themselves. The blatant disregard and disrespect for the rest of the fallen soldiers memorialized on that land is disgusting.

As for being a media whore, while this may be true, can you really blame her? The best way for her to freely express her speech is through that pack of wolves. Sadly, most Americans(I use that term loosly) get their opinions and thoughts from mainstream media. The best way for her to get her message to the masses is to prostitute her sons memory.

She is a loving mother. He son that is alive is in another State and he wants his mommy back. She lost her job, she lost her husband, he mother had a stroke, but she is fawning in front of 1000 cameras.

Who is making her house payment, or paying her kids tuition, or paying for the electric? Is she going to lose the house next?

When the dust settles her life is going to suck. Who is going to help her pick up the pieces, Code Pink? As soon as she stops being "good copy" all of her supporters are going to move on dot org. I bet she regrets this charade in the days to come.

But she doesn't regret it today. Al Sharpton came by, and he wanted to help her pay respects to a mock grave. It was a personal moment, nothing staged at all about it. Honest, genuine and touching. Yeah right.

MEDIA WHORE!

And what does this have to do with my sex life? A little projection going on there Mr. "Empire".

Why does it matter to you? How is George Bush being funded in everything he does? With the life and limbs of American servicemen, debt and expansion of the money supply. My children's wages will be attached for a long time to come because of a current President and supine congress who refuse to act fiscally responsible.

It doesn't matter to me, but it might matter to her son who is still alive. He has asked her to come home. He needs his mother back. Her husband divorced her and she has lost her job. Her own mother has had a stroke. For such a loving and devoted parent, she has little time for those people, but plenty of time for her knew friends.

She has national noterity now, she won't have problems at all paying her bills. But reguardless what makes the difference to any of us what her financial situation is anyway? She has chosen an unjust cause to fight against and she has every reason to do so.

So your basically saying no soldier with a family should be in iraq then cuz they should be home taking care of their children instead? When you fight for a cause you believe in that cause becomes bigger than yourself and your family. She is just as much a soldier as any serving in iraq. No she don't carry a gun, but she is fighting the war in her own way. So don't you worry about her son, it is none of anyone's business but her's.

Not exactly. It is her son's business, his father's business and the grandparent's business and the cousin's business and the aunts' business and the uncles' business. She has clearly made the decision that it is not HER business. She only has one business and that is the "Cindy Sheehan" business. And that's fine. He's probably better off not having a nutlog for a hands-on mother.

this lady is a joke. When you take an oath no matter what it is you should honor it. her son took an oath to be there if our contry calls him to duty. It is sads that he died, but if you look at the top 6 democratically controlled cities over the time period that we have been in Iraq, there has been more MURDERS in those 6 democratic cities than there have been US casualties in the entire war. I mean every death is tragic but i mean in the battle of the bulge it was like 19,000 US soldiers died in the first month approx. 19,000 guys in one month. I admit that WWII and Iraq are different situations. However, creating a democracy in the middle east in the long run will be extremely beneficial for the rest of the middle east and the world.
On a second note, I can't stand when people say that we are there only for oil because that arguement is just a copout. If we wanted oil we wouldn't have gone to iraq. If we wanted oil we would have just taken over kuwait...I mean we CONTROLLED!!! the country in 1991. So that arguement is void. Secondly, we get most of our oil form South America anyways. I have a buddy who is a Army Ranger and the are going on missions all the time and not one mission has been about oil or anything even remotely related to oil. Peace brothers!

Cindy Sheehan Arrested, Forced to Live Indoors
by Scott Ott

(2005-09-26) -- Washington D.C. police today arrested anti-war protester Cindy Sheehan, forcing her to live indoors, at least temporarily.

Police took her into custody for sitting on a sidewalk, blocking pedestrian traffic near the White House, as a crowd of her supporters chanted, "No Bush. No Wars. No law can make us live indoors."

Mrs. Sheehan, a nature enthusiast, recently spent a month camping near President George Bush's Texas ranch, sparking an outdoor-living craze among activists advocating a variety of progressive causes.

A police spokesman said the perpetually-grieving peace icon would eventually "be released into the wild."
