hey everyone - I have some questions about growing bulk poo. First I can not make my mind up whether to do one big container(10lbs)or 2-4 smaller ones. Basically would I yield more in a big conatainer? Secondly when I apply my casing on the poo after colonization do I let my tray incubate again or do I fruit it immediately? thanks in advance

i cant predict what your yield will be, but i would guess a large container might give you bigger fruits/yield.
after you apply the casing, put back in incubator. and read up on this to help you out.

What is 50/50? half and half of what? I hate it when people make threads for newbs, but dont go into explination. I want to do a poo bulk, and I need to know what these things mean.

The top 2 sticky threads by roadkill and shirley knott have lots of great info for beginners. People will just mention that 50/50 is peat/vermiculite but you are better off reading a full account of why it is used, ph adjustment etc.
Most questions have already been answered but the FAQ will give more info that a simple post probably won't mention.

theres something the pros dont realize around here. When you do a search, you see about 200 posts that contradict each other, and this just further confuses us newbs.Take the 50/50+ tek for example. The first part says to use lime. Then on the same page, it says not to, but use crushed coral instead. I just want a straight and forward tek that even tells WHY you use EVERY ingredient, and or any possible substitues. These damn teks can be pretty confusing to us newbs.

The 50/50 plus does tell you why to use a certain kind of lime and then it's substitutes. Putting dolomitic lime or another kind of lime with a magnesium content over 2% is likely to burn your myc. Everything in the 50/50 tek other than water, peat and verm is to balance the ph. You might have seen this "caco3", mentioned. It's calcium carbonate which will balance the ph without burning the myc. Sooo, things mentioned by people for use with 50/50 are often forms of caco3, like chalk (not blackboard chalk, that's gypsum) and oyster shells.

well spawning to a large amount of poo can have it benefits as well as its detriments. you should have better flushes with bigger shrooms than with a smaller substrate but you also are putting all your eggs in one basket. try a larger substrate, maybe 5 lbs and then do a couple of smaller ones with the other half of your poo. especially for your first go, get your feet wet before you dive in.
yes, after the poo is 100% colonized then you should case it and reincubate until you see the myc just under the surface of the casing layer. this usually is 2-3 days for me, so keep your eye on it.
what are you using for spawn?

Nothing is straight forward in this hobby. Its not an exact science, its an art, and thats something that you newbs dont realize. Just about ANYTHING works, its all adaption on your materials, your goals, your environment, and your abilities. Just as roadkills tek seems straight forward, notice he doesnt pasteurize for as long as most recommend..more contradictions. But it works for him, where as other things work for others. 50/50 and 60/40 are easily found and the basic principle is the same, peat and verm or coir and verm..the actual amounts of things, and buffers, and buffer used changes from person to person.

You need to remember that when I started pastuerizing horse poo...
there was no other horse poo teks...the other teks came later.
This is how I was taught to pastuerize by Pavlov's Dog...
many years ago...and I still do it to this day.

Oh I know why...and to me, with everyone using unpasteurized..it seems you only need to kill bug eggs, so I dont really think h-poo needs to be pasteurized for very long. I had alot of success recently with some big tubs that had mold growing on it, and bugs in it..just dumped 185 degree water on it twice and let it sit an hour each time..I wasnt saying your way doesnt work as well as others..just that it doesnt say the same thing as other teks, theres always slight variances because its not an exact science.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I decided to do 4 smaller poo casings. I did this to avoid losing one big one to contams.
