Direct Inoculation

Instead of letting a jar colonize and then make it into a casing why can't I just directly inoculate a casing mixture?

if you didn't need that step we wouldn't do it. it's there for a reason.

I've never seen anybody really find the answer-- they think they have, so they stop thinking. But the job is to seek mystery, evoke mystery, plant a garden in which strange plants grow and mysteries bloom. The need for mystery is greater than the need for an answer."

just remember you're trying to replicate what happens naturally. read up on what mushies are all about and you will see why that will not work.

Basically, it would take too long. Spore germination/mycelium doen't "take" to somathing like poo or straw like a high nutritive spawn like bird seed, brown rice, or rye.

If you have qts. of grain, you can shake them up and this will speed things up considerably.

But if you, say, make a big PF casing, it would take forever to be totally colonized. There's just more efficient ways of going about it...it wouldn't be impossible though...

a casing mix has no nutrients, it cant support life, it simply there to give additional water for the mushies to use
