WBS to Water Ratio???? Quick Reply Please
    #4569930 - 08/23/05 09:01 AM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I know just mixing water with WBS straight from the bag works, because i have done it twice now. I used a 3:1 ratio both times, with 1.5 cups WBS and .5 or barely over cups of water. That was for quart jars. I am getting ready to do some more jars and was wondering if anyone knew a better ratio? My jars usually colonize fully, but take about 2-3 weeks.

If you simmer the WBS on low heat for about 20 minutes, until you see about 5% of the kernels have exploded, and then rinse and strain well, the WBS will have an ideal moisture content.

Try varying your ratios, slightly (5-10 ml of water difference per jars), and do a few jars of each ratio (2-3 jars should be fine). A dozen jars would give you a nice idea on what ratio works best. It will vary depending on the seed you get, so theres no set number. Right around there, or a little more water, I bet would be best. Unless you see alot (over 5%) exploded grains after you do what you do, then try less water.

I swear i saw once where someone used 2:1 which seems like a lot of water, but maybe it works. I can only do 4 quart jars at a time in my PC. Im thinking of doing 2 with just barely more water than 3:1. Then the other 2 with closer to 2:1 but not quite that much water.

I used to do WBS the no-soak way, and you just have to eye it out and learn by trial and error. Eventually, I abandoned that method for various reasons, and now I always soak for 15-20 hours.

This tek has some pictures on the water levels if you don't want to soak the wbs. http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/24332

i just soak mine at least 12 hours, but a little more is better... then rinse and drain really well.. load in jars. pc. let cool it cool overnight. inoculate.

it doesnt take that much extra time. and if you put them in to soak before you go to bed, it'll probably be just perfect by the time you get around to messing with it the next day

good luck
