Perlite?
    #4568805 - 08/22/05 10:46 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I'm ordering spores in a couple of days and humidification sounds like it'll be a bitch. I found this tek and it seems promising, I've just got one question. What the hell is perlite? I tried looking it up on dictionary.com but it didn't give be a very good definition.

EDIT: Nevermind, I figured it out. Now I have another question though. What's an ideal terrarium set up? Can I just buy a terrarium from a pet store or something and do I need a wire mesh top or does it need to be a glass top or some kind of top where things can't get into the terrarium?

something similar to a 10 gall fish tank. Look it up in the FAQ`s either that or just browse for a while unill you see enugh ictures to where the explinations acctually start to make since. GL

10 gallon fish tank? Jesus, how big is that? I'm trying to keep it hidden. Even if I use the perlite method then I'm going to need a 10 gallon?

10 gallon isnt that big man, the one Im using is about 31 gallons I think (not a fish tank, but still thats the size).

There are many different teks out there, but things need their room to grow. I wouldn't think keeping something 10gallon hidden would be too hard, since I can pull it off with something three times as large.

That's what I get when I put in 10 gallon fish tank in Google.

Another question, yes, another one. Instead of boiling water to sterilize, would I be able to put bleach water in them to kill the germs?

I bough one of these

for $1.50

I cut a rectangular hole in the top. Then taped some plastic wrap over the hole punctured it a bunch of times with a needle.

Loaded it with Perlite and off it goes!!

Just enough light. Lotsa humidity.

A fantastic buy if you don't mind styrofoam. Is styrofoam as unfriendly to the Environment as it used to be??

I recall a huge No Styro campaign for a long time in the 90's

Perlite is a volcanic rock. Once it has absorbed water it slowly releases it into your air. You can find it at most garden stores or nurseries. Good luck.

You can use a ten gallon aquarium:

A salad bowl with a lid:

A mini double-tub:

Or anything else that holds humidity and allows light to pass through it.

Would it be a smart idea to dig a hole outside and stick a tub with the cakes in it with perlite and water? That would get enough sunlight to let them grow healthily right? If it had perlite and stuff in it with a top sealed shut and a hole in the top covered with plastic or something so then the humidity doesn't escape then would it matter what the outside temperature is? Not sure if any of that sentence made sense, but you can probably figure out what I'm trying to say.

it'll kill them, they dont need much light, unlike plants they dont photosynthesize light for energy

I have no idea about putting it outside, I keep mine in a dark closet, tilled their birthed,
then they just stay in the bedroom, but I live alone.

The shed may be too hot depending on where you live and the time of year.

I've got another question: When my spores are colonizing in a jar do they need to be incubated or can I just stick them in my ceiling? I have a little hatch that I can open up and stick things in and I was figuring that'd be a good place to go.
