EBay buys led to drug bust Man accused of manufacturing Ecstasy had bought lab items online
By Felisa Cardona Denver Post Staff Writer
A man accused of making Ecstasy out of his home was caught because he used eBay to purchase oils, glassware and capsule-filler devices that are typically used in clandestine drug labs, authorities said Friday.
Cameron J. Bartley, 30, was charged with possession with intent to distribute Ecstasy. The charge carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
Bartley was arrested as he left his Green Valley Ranch home Thursday morning. Monica Lee Pywell, 45, was arrested with Bartley.
Federal authorities and Denver police declined to file charges against Pywell. She was released from Denver County Jail.
An investigation continues into whether she was involved in the drug case, federal prosecutors said.
Drug Enforcement Administration officers found about $1 million worth of the drug in one of the largest and rarest busts in state history.
Most Ecstasy is manufactured overseas, authorities said. Only 115 labs like the one raided Thursday have been found in the U.S.
Agents found a loaded AR-15 assault rifle with a scope under Bartley's bed, three other firearms and $5,900 in a stack of cash, said DEA Special Agent Karen J. Flowers.
Bartley is contracted to work the ticket counter for Hooters Air and lives close to Denver International Airport. He has a pilot license, but not the kind needed to fly commercial aircraft.
Agents looked into the possibility of drug trafficking by plane but found no evidence.
Pywell works for Frontier Airlines as a manager of customer service.
Representatives for Hooters Air and Frontier Airlines said they would cooperate with federal authorities if they need information. Both airlines have a policy that employees must pass a criminal background check and drug screen before employment.
Hooters Air president Mark Peterson said he was surprised by the arrest.
"Hooters Air has had no indications that any of its aircraft were used for the transportation of any illegal substances," Peterson said.
DEA agents called Bartley a sophisticated drug cook who was a major supplier of Ecstasy.
An agent in San Diego notified Denver agents in May that Bartley had been purchasing about $6,000 worth of suspicious items from eBay using a PayPal account, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court.
The purchases began in December 2002, and some of the items included expensive cooking pans and gas masks, the complaint says.
The items were sent directly to Bartley's home, in the 19000 block of East 53rd Avenue.
On Thursday, agents got the trash that was placed out in front of Bartley's home and found one-gallon containers of liquids, rubber gloves and large filter papers containing a white substance along with regular mail addressed to Bartley.
After the discovery, Denver police and SWAT officers went into Bartley's house with a warrant and found a dismantled, complex drug lab inside the garage and house.
About 389 grams of the substance were found in Ziploc bags in Bartley's master bedroom. About 85 milligrams are contained in one Ecstasy capsule sold on the street, agents said.
"At this point, we don't know if (the drugs) were destined for people in Denver or for exporting in other areas," Flowers said. "He was not selling them by the pill outside his house; he was more of a wholesale distributor selling large amounts to different people."

I wonder how he came upon that information?
