Flour and water mixture for sclerotia?
    #4569706 - 08/23/05 09:45 AM (11 years, 3 months ago)

Do you think a simple flour and water mixture would work for sclerotia? It is the most space efficient way to fill jars, cheap and readily available. I thought it would need space for the myc to work its way through the substrate, but I know remember vendors selling bags specifically for sclerotia which had the consistency of modelling clay.

I have made a batch with bleached wheat flour with some honey, coffee and lime added. We will see how it goes. I have only microwaved it once, to see if the flour bleaching process really does kill endospores.

Thanks, I have read that before. There seems to be a lot of different ideas about sclerotia growing. Some vendors use VERY diffferent water contents in their grass seed recipies. Many said rye grain doesnt work well yet roger rabbit reports great growth with it (maybe only when coffee soaked though).
I have thought of the idea of adding water during a sclerotia grow, which only Workman thought maybe a good idea.
As I said vendors bags were like modelling clay, i.e. no space to penetrate. Maybe a solid substrate could lead to larger stones, it is essentially just like one huge grain kernel.

workman and Roger both know their stuff, I'd still be hesitant of adding water during growth

I may do a side by side comparison with 2 small jars. If you ever harvested sclerotia you would find the grain is totally dried up, I think there is nutrients going to waste due to the lack of water. In nature they would have water added during the grow. People add lots of additional water to a regular cubensis grow.
If you were to dunk a jar when it is time to harvest, I cannot see what harm it would do.

adding that water for a cubensis is post growth and usual just prior to harvest
as long as it's not still colonizing it shouldnt do any harm to the sclerotia
regarding the outdoor, there's more involved in keeping mycelium healthy than in
in a lab grow, loads of beneficial organisims that help it along.

Post colonisation it gets misted and a casing layer. PF cakes hold moisture in the verm and do well with subsequent dunking. I have done a cubs grow with no misting or additional humidity, I would inject water so it was sitting in a pool of water, no water would be left the next day as the shrooms sucked it all up.
I would add water after full colonisation. Maybe flood with sterile water for 24hours and suck out the excess afterwards, it would also flush out the "yellow myc piss".

If you saw pictures of the wizenned little grains of rice after harvesting sclerotia you may think it was a better idea. The grain is so completely dry that I do not think a pre harvest dunk will work very well since the grain is so dry it will not absorb too well, like a bone dry towel or a moist towel.

I also thought the adding water is a good idea, just havnt worked enough with stones to mention my thoughts..worth a try and the very least..probably fill it with sterile water every month or so. I'd make sure I added alot of verm to the substrate..colonized grains dont absorb water as well as when theres verm mixed in..of course then you have verm in your stones..but whats a little glitter shits...never was a problem for me.

BTW, I also have had good success with rye grain forming stones..though I couldnt get any fruits off the rye, where the rye grass fruited much better (though stone production was worse). I dont know how well flour would work, Id guess not much nutrients though, I'd bet youd still need good N. And let me tell you, stone production when spawned to poo, was excellent...far better then anything else I tried, by triple or more..couldnt get fruits off it though. I only got all the stones that grew up out of the substrate, still havnt tried them, they're dried sitting there..but they may be a bit to "shitty" for me. My sclerotia work has all been with Tamps BTW.

Growing with bags, start to finish (including my new grain and substrate prep)
Anyone looking to start bulk tubs/mono tubs/shotgun hybrids? Good tubs to use..
How I do grain (old still good tips)
Turn your closet into a fruiting chamber
Casing layer colonization and overlay

once the surface is starts to absorb it should start picking it up quicker, sounds like time for a couple of batches to experiment with

Yes, coffee grinds are about 2%N, maybe thats part of the reason Rodger gets good results with coffee soaked grain.
I also wouldnt fancy eating manure sclerotia!
