Good books on foreign affairs/policy?
    #4568866 - 08/23/05 01:02 AM (11 years, 3 months ago)

I'm trying to expand my political knowledge, and while I feel very knowledgeable about economics, I feel my knowledge of foreign policy could use some improvement. Can anyone recommend some good books on the subject. I'm currently reading one by Chomsky("Hegemony or Survival") but I figure I'd better supplement that with an author whose views are less radical and anti-American.

I will not recommend any book to you until you tell me that you have in fact read "FREE TO CHOOSE" by Milton and Rose Friedman.

I am currently just starting out on The Lexus and The Olive Tree by Thomas Friedman (no relation, of NYTimes fame). It is about globalization. I will give you a full report if I find it compelling.

That's a pretty broad area, I'm not sure what angle you want to take...

The Breakdown of Nations - by Leopold Kohr
First published in 1957, the author discusses what he feels is the problem leading to World Wars and some solutions.

The Prince - by Nicol? Machiavelli
(here's an online version)
A classic, not specific to foreign policy but provides you with an understanding of politics AS IT IS.

The Art of War - by Sun Ztu
(an online version)
Another classic. You can read this with an open mind and an eye to more universal applications.

Endless Enemies: The Making of an Unfriendly World - by Jonathan Kwitny (1984)

A Fate Worse Than Debt - by Susan George
Covers the foreign policy of debt

ROFL, just kidding. "the international Jew" sounds like some Long Islander who travels frequently.

Meet Estel, the International Jew!

I just finished reading Shadow, by Woodward. Excellent book, talks about the potential for misuse of the independant counsel and the climate of scandal created around the president/administration [by the media] since Nixon.
