"Are we alive or just breathing"

I recently got into a small debate with a few friends over what the singer means by this.... I will state what I think he means by it after I see what all you guys think...

I guess it comes down to what is meant "being alive" and "just breathing." Does being alive mean you can live without breathing? Does it mean you are only alive if you breathe? There are many organisms (I think, and correct me if I'm wrong) that live without ever taking a breath.

imho it questions if some people are doing anything meaningful. Are we just observing and experiencing life? Are we really in control? Sounds like a wake-up call for those who are not willing to accept anything outside of routine.

Just my thoughts.

Some of us are in control. Most of us are in a wake-and-hold pattern. I have learned to be in control. Most of the younger people I have experienced are in an observing pattern.

I love my life and what I have chosen to do as a living. What I do benefits others. It is my experience the most people choose to do something simply to earn an income, not to benefit mankind.

most who imagine they are in control
are being controlled by habits imprinted over time.

control is not the issue.

being like a child is closer, since to a child there is always a flood of sensation; feelings and thoughts are in constant flux.

life is change

Yes! Losing the childlike qualities of wonder and joy in existing moves us away from being ALIVE and toward merely breathing.

A doctor could check the vital signs of the average, conforming adult and would confirm that person was alive. But do they FEEL alive? Are they still thrilled by nature's beauty and mystery? When was the last time they really tasted their food? Savored it?

My aim is to grow more childlike each year.
