Colonizing
    #456636 - 11/12/01 11:41 PM (23 years, 2 days ago)

AFOAF has 36 1/2 pint verm/brf jars he inocualted last sunday and when he looked at them today 32 of them had large white spots of mycelium(sp). None of the 36 jars have contams and 12 jars he didn't have enough spore water to inoculate r fine too. He was pretty happy, and told me to post this for him.

they are all ecuador cubensis. Do u know if the age of the substrate makes any difference? my friend has 12 jars that weren't inoculated and they didn't get contamed. they have been sitting around for a little over a week. could he use them in a week or two when he gets more spores or should he just make some new cakes?

TeRzMaStA - RE: Aged Substarte:
Are the jars hole still covered (tinfoil)? If so contams should not be able to get to the substrate. There are two thoughts on your situation.
1. Start over - newer is better
2. Your substrate is in good condition without contams. This is good, because you know that if you get contams, it most likely came from innoculation.

I wouldl use the jars.

When you say "last Sunday" do you mean the eleventh? It takes about four days for spores to germinate and another day or two before you can expect to see growth. Unless you inoculated with live mycelium, any sign of growth before four days is highly likely to be a contam. Are you sure you arn't growing mold?

36 Jars hectic Brother YOu cultivating for the nation
Say you get 4 dry grams per jar 144 Dry grams Cool :)
Why do you do so many ? YOu should look into some mass production

Go ahead and innoc your waiting sterilized jars. There should be no prob. Dude says he has waited over a month before innoc'ing jars before w/o any problems. As long as the tape is still on them and the lids are tight there should be minimal(if any) loss of moisture.

why do you have them upside down? wouldn't that limit gas exchange?

My friend was told to flip them and make a space between the cake and the jar so there is an air pocket around the bottom of the cakes. that that will help the bottoms of the cakes colonize faster.

yeah I guess maybe, but if there's no gas exchange the mycelium will stall, I wouldn't leave them upside down longer than a day or two.

you're doing fine dude, it shouldn't be that much longer and they'll be fully colonized. are you going to case any of them? i'd highly suggest it considering you have so many jars.

There is a thermometer in the pic. its at 73. i know its cold but my friend couldn't get a fish tank heater and some bins. He'll get em soon. Sometimes it drops to 69 but its usually at 70-75

AFOAF is gonna make a few casings probably about 3 maybe more. He's gonna do 50/50+ . this is his first time. he'll see how it goes before deciding to do more. he doesn't wanna lose too many cakes. if everything goes well he'll make a lot of casings.

yeah, you may want to look into some coco coir as well. it makes a great casing layer also.

are u using the actual lids with a hole cut in? or are you just using fiter disks and lid bands?
if you are using just lid bands and filter disks...you may want to keep an eye out for drying of the substrate...

but from the looks of it, you are doing fine...and just a lil bit paranoid of failure....

My friends plan was to use the disks and lid bands but he wasn't able to get some containers and a heater so he decided it would be better to leave the actual lids on so they wouldn't dry out. He's gonna try to get some containers and a fish tank heater soon but it looks like it will be to late for this batch.

let me get this straight, you have the entire lid + lid bad + filter disk, on?
are there holes punched into the lid?

the reason you turn them upside down is to drain off the co2, and wouldn't there have to be holes to inoculate? i always leave mine upside down

Yeah. That's how you do it. Flip em, and pat the lid so that a little space is left, which will drain the CO2 (which is heavier than air). Basic science..

You know what I say, good job. Looks like things are comming along nicely. One suggestion bud, do more casings than that, mabey even try the flat cake method, cakes really don't compare to casings output wise, IMHO. I have been wanting to see more of the flat cake method around, but seems its not catching on. Try it, you have more than enough jars to spare, and if you do let me know how it turns out. Otherwise I think that everything you are doing is fine.
Good luck.
Oh yeah find a heat blanket pad thingy and stick it in that place the jars are, that'll keep 'em toasty.
Later

its actually one filter disk my friend inoculated through, another filter disk over that, then the lid and band. the lid has 4 holes poked through it.

My friend left his jars alone for a couple of days and when he checked on them he noticed his first shroom. He's gonna birth the cake now. The picture sucks cause my camera looks like ass when the flash isn't on, but when the flash is on the jar gives a huge glare and you can't make anything out. I am taking pictures for my friend because he doesn't have a digi cam.

Updated pics of my friends jars.
all his jars

a close up

least colonized

most jars look like the next 2

Some of his cakes are fully colonized but he is waiting an extra day or two for the mycellium network to strengthen.
