Infinite Continuum
    #4565556 - 08/22/05 03:13 AM (11 years, 3 months ago)

Okay, if the universe in which we exist is an infinite continuum, then does this mean that every single thing that could happen will happen an infinite number of times?

When I think about, if time is truly infinite, it seems that the universe could be created and destroyed over and over and over again simply because time is neverending and everything is constantly changing.

Like, the life I am living now has happened many times before simply because it can.  But eventually there will be another me, but with black hair.  Does this make sense to anyone?

The universe will constantly recreate itself an infinite number of times and exaggerate every possibility.  I will be born again and again as the same person and as different people...?

I've actually thought this exact same thing. Yes, because time is infinite everything has actually already happened, probably infinite times and will happen infinite times!

Arghhh, where'd my uniqueness go???????  :rofl2:

I guess we like eating our favourite meal over and over again, but is it ever truly the same?

So umm, using this theory of infinite time continuum, does that mean there is no such thing as lies? Like, if I say, I once had every babe and her supermodel sidekick over for a raunchy party on my island one night, technically, am I telling the truth?

Where do I stop and begin? Am I restricted to this body and this parenthesis of time I call my life or do I stretch out beyond and into infinity?

Yes. Everything will exist. Nothing will exist.

We could live these same lives over again with green skin and 3 arms.

Why? Simply because it exists as a possibility.

Do you think deja-vu could be something like when we come close to an event that has happened before? Like, its just a glimpse because obviously in the confines of infinity the chance of the exact same unfolding occuring the same way for a long ammount of time is small. People say "this has happened before" when they experience it and yet they don't believe in paranormal stuff. Could it be this that gives people the feeling to think they have encountered this experience before when they don't believe in such things?

Like, if I say, I once had every babe and her supermodel sidekick over for a raunchy party on my island one night,

Even infinity is not long enough to contain that probability.

I understand that this is a discussion of the infinite, and therefore because time is presumed infinite every variation or possibility in our own lives is not only plausible, but has conceivably occured an infinite number of times.

However there seems to be an assumption that we are immortal, and that some being who endured an identical existence to me formed a past life that I would inevitably follow. How does this concept jive with determinism vs. free will? Ego and individuality grab hold and ask, what are the ramifications on the future of this infinite cycle if we currently form the first iteration? There's a one in infinity chance this is the case.

Is there a dominant theory in the world of astrophysics - is our universe going to continue to expand forever, or will it eventually contract? The former theory denies this concept of infinity, whereas the latter potentially fulfills it.

I think that the concept of the infinite continuum would totally cancel out free will, assuming that all of these infinite possibilities we are experiencing are simply one moment that never began and can never end.
