Verm and Wbs
    #4564952 - 08/22/05 12:26 AM (11 years, 3 months ago)

I recently read a post about mixing verm with wbs for more moisture. If any1 does this, could they give me the ratio of verm/wbs that they use.

Sorry to kump into your thread like this but it's along the same lines. I want to try a whole rye grain substrate...does it go alone or should I mix with verm?

the verm is like a moisture buffer. Instead of getting wet spots, the verm absorbs excess water. If the seed is too dry, the verm holds moisture that the myc can use to grow and colonize. The rationale holds for any grain, but most common for WBS because it doesn't absorb as much water as rye.

Vermiculite adds moisture to your shrooms. More water allows you to get more flushes and bigger shrooms.
As for the correct ratio of Verm to WBS ?
Maybe 1/4 - 1 cup per quart.
I would do a few jars with different verm/wbs ratios - that way you can find out which one works for you.
Start with say, 1/8th of a cup in one quart, then 1/4 cup in another, then 3/4 cup in another, then 1 cup.
Find the one that gave you the most and then fine tune that one.
Say that the 1/4 cup per quart produced the most shrooms-then try some more with a closer ratio as in 3/16th's in one 5/16ths in another, along with one at 1/4 cup. Eventually you will hit a "Sweet Spot" that works the best for you and stick with.
I have tried the Verm/WBS mixture @ 1/4 cup per quart and I have tried the Verm added on the Bottom and on the top, but, my results aren't worth posting, lol they sucked to be honest about it-but not due to the mix---It was me that made it not work. I stick with the same tek that I have used forever it seems.
The Verm mixture does work. Finding the right ratio is the fun part too.

Good Luck-Sorry I couldn't be much more of a help though.
