The WBS Wall
    #4558675 - 08/20/05 11:02 AM (18 years, 7 months ago)

Anyone else have a really hard time stepping up into WBS/Grain Substrates?

Im having a hell of a time.

My first jars grew all slimy and stinky.

My second batch (40+) got the green death.

Im going to sterilize my whole GD kitchen tonight and try again.

Spose it took me 3 attempts to get the Pf right.

I got Casings to fruit on my first attempt.

Yeah , sounds frustrating....You must have lots of dust in the air to be getting so many problems....Maybe its worth it to build a flow hood from a Tupperware box and a heppa air unit from wallmart.. That setup will cost probably 200 bucks, but Ive never had any problems with it. 0 contams so far...In my flow hood i use it to inoculate jars, spawn to poo for bulk and case the bulk , all under fresh air and use alcohol to sterilize. I also have a furnace filter (air filtered ) fruiting chamber to throw the casings into when their ready..I can take some pics of my setup for you if you want...Like i said Ive had 100 percent success using alcohol and fresh air in my setup.

I just started using wbs a few weeks ago and I am having great success. IF they are getting slimy i think that your wbs is too wet. I lost 6 jars my first try because of this. Now I make sure that it had drained really well and add about 10% verm and I have 100 % success with tyvek filters on top. Good luck

I am in a moldy building no doubt.

Im re-enforcing all of my sterile spaces with poly fill and tyvek where air can exchange.. see what happens.

Follow the tek, which ever you use, to a T. I have followed 2 wbs teks so far and no contams. When I was using cakes I got slammed with contams but I was also really sloppy w/ innoculating and house was pretty filthy too start. I definately had to work on my cleanliness. Now i go around once a week and spray every thing I see down with Lysol.

you may want to consider building a 'sterility tent' with PVC and plastic
make sure it has a man trap so you can decontaminate before entering the clean area

If you are not using a no-flow glove box you should make one since they can be made for under 50 bucks... easy.

throy,

"Ok, I do all of my work in a "non-sterile environement".
I use no chemical cleaners - just dish detergent. I have 4 dogs and 5 birds in my house and I can't be " Spraying Bleach or Lysol " around. That is why I go all out with the Tyvek, Poly-Fill, foil, coffee filters. Also, I have been 100% successfull doing it this way and as of today, zero contaminated jars."

I have used a soaked cloth instead of spraying - just a bleach soaked paper towel to wipe everything off and the same, only with alcohol, for inocculation.

With a little common sense and a little knowledge on how to be really clean - you can grow mushrooms using your kitchen countertop as a makeshift " Laboratory ".

I still have 100% success using this Tek.

Of course, anyone can get that same success rate as long as the Tek they are using, is followed to the letter.

1. If your PC times/pressures are correct and it is working properly
2. If your syringe and your inoculation Tek are clean/viable

You should have 100% success. That is, success, to the point that the jars get colonized 100% without contams,  once you open those jars then that success rate changes, lol.

This is based on my opinion and my experience.
" Pc must work properly & user must be able to use it properly  ."
" Syringe must be clean & the person who made it too .
" Innocculation must be made to where no contams come into contact with the needle before insertion " .

That is really just ' Ole ' common sense.

For example, I got contams before I wrote that Tek, but not from the Tek itself. I got the contams from a syringe that I was using at that time.
The Needle was a 50 ml leur - lock that I have used countless times with 0 contams. The problem was when I inserted the needle into the ' LC '( liquid culture) and attempted to suck - up the mycelia. I never seen it suck air into the syringe from behind the plunger, due to me trying a little too hard to get the mycelia into the syringe. But, I tried this 3 times and I knew it wasn't my sterility/cleanliness. Then I saw it happen, no warnings, no feelings, no sounds, just the vision of a bunch of air bubbles coming in from the wrong end of the syringe. Now, I watch carefully for this to happen everytime and if I see one small bubble enter, the whole syringe gets tossed.
I also put a BB or a piece of broken glass in the LC jar, now, to break it up before use.
Smaller syringes doesn't seem to do this as much as the bigger ones do.
This only happened using the 50 ml syringes.

Anything can go wrong.

Good Luck and many shrooms to ya !

My two pennies.

Doc

No problem clutch.

That little bit of info could have saved me alot of jars if I had of known that before hand, lol.
Oh well,

Wow Doc,

Thanks for that Post..

No disrespect to your tec btw.

It's perfect and I used it again.

I also sub'ed in Popcorn for a a dozen.

I was way more carefull each time.

Truth is I dont know what happened. My LC must of been contamed, or I didn't soak the WBS long enough. I figure its one of those 2 things.

Im doing 4 jars a day for the next while to see if I get it 100%.

Which Im confident now that I will.

Thanks Again DOc for your post and work.. Ill take it all back to the drawing bored good sir.

You never mention how long you pressure cook for. I hope its at least 90 minutes at 15 PSI. Most find popcorn to be more difficult to work with, however each person is different and you gotta do what works for you..
