Hylocereus grafting
    #4563809 - 08/21/05 08:14 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

hey all,

Just thought I'd share this pic I found(not mine).

http://www.lapshin.org/cultivar/N30/Hasa...-hylocereus.jpg

Just imagine if all those grafted cacti were peyote's! I think I'm going to try some vertical grafting onto my Hylocereus Undatus cutting once it roots. I hope this gives some of you grafting enthusiasts some good ideas .

the areole grafting is pretty but these grafts don't resist more than one year or two if you're lucky...
there are better rootstocks, you can graft onto the areoles of others too...

Just thought I'd mention that hylocereus undatus fruits are sold in some supermarkets as "dragon fruit." I find that the fruits are a bit bland, but it would be a cheap way to get hundreds and hundreds of fresh seeds to grow grafting stocks!

Yeah, they would not make good long term grafting stocks. I just thought it to be a good alternative to pereskiopsis if you could not find any. I'll post pics if I try this method.

there's another con, JB -
the vascular tissue becomes TOO thick - so that when the stock dies and you cut your scion you'll have a hard time cutting that central tissue, but they mostly root well on their own (depending on the scion species) but due to the hardness of the tissue a re-graft is out of question, unless you cut its very top.
sure it's ok if you don't have anything else to play with! personally i would rather use a common cereus peruvianus instead...

Thanks for the info felix . I just tried grafting loph. seedlings to Myrtillocactus areoles. Just an expiriment. I'll post pics if they take.
