I'm HOT for Teacher * 4
    #4563577 - 08/21/05 05:13 PM (18 years, 5 months ago)

I have to say first off I am in complete awe of this backyard bed! After much reading here in the forums I decided to go bulk outside. A raised bed was constructed with bricks, and into the mix went 2 40lb bags of worm castings, 2 small bales of straw from Michaels, a tarp full of local horse manure/wood shavings, and 2 bags of vermiculite. The mix was layered on top of a soaker hose (thanks Joshua) along with 6 quarts of colonized WBS - Golden Teacher. Colinization was quick, and right at the 3 week mark pins were surfacing throughout. In no way was I prepared for what happened next......the following three days I picked huge flushes both in the morning and night. Everytime I cleared a colony there was another group ripening right behind it. The fruits were extremely healty looking, beefy as hell..... many being in the 40 to 70 gram range. 3 5 foot screens were layered with fruits for fan drying while the excalibur food dehydrator comes in the mail......so no word of yield yet...but it sure looks plentiful. Thanks to all the Moderators, and incredibly knowledgable people on this site.....you encourage us all to be cultivators of the devine! I'll try and update with 2nd flush results-

Right on djsage420, its been feeling pretty tropical in the sticky south. Temps were in the 80's to 90's most days with a lot of rain. Humid as all, I almost thought it would be to warm to fruit....but as you can see... I thought the fern would give all the colonies good company.....and yes the stout fruits started rearanging the bricks without my consent. Potency is definitely up there too! Thanks for all the comments and ratings........go outdoors!

While everything was colonizing I ran the soaker hose a couple times for about 20 min and hand watered a few times. It was raining every few days so the bed stayed pretty moist on its own. Mother nature was kind and rained everyday of the fruiting week - I just sat back and watched things get out of control. Definitly go for innoculating larger area's if you can - well worth it!

Soaker hose was on the bottom of the 6" deep bed. Bed felt like a nice absorbent sponge.....yields at the end of the week!

Happy the grow was so inspiring for all! Can't wait till the second flush....and who knows how many will come after that? The soaker hose is perforated with thousands of tiny holes so water slowly seeps out, I use these all the time for gardening. Get 'em at home depot or lowes.

alright.......you pinned me down I'm whistling dixie in the Peach state! > themills - I'm banking on that September peak. When the next jars of EQ finish in maybe a week or so, I'll be starting a bed right next to the teacher patch for a real clash of the Titans-

WDS- sounds like the odds are against you for good conditions. The outdoor beds do best when they are evenly moist i.e. soaker hose or a fine water nozzle. Watering with a bucket isnt gonna cut it. I would stick to indoors for now.

Anyone think a light organic fertlizer would be helpful between flushes? Seems like so many nutrients were sucked up from the huge first flush, maybe a second flush would be more productive with some nutrient replacement. Thought of using Alfalfa meal.... think it 2-3-2. Thoughts anyone?

Alright folks.....final first flush yield comes in a day early due to the excellece of the Excalibur food dehydrator. Liked the rear mounted fan for really even, low temp drying......hell of a machine. Much to my amazement 1lb.& 10 oz's of cracker dry fruits went into mason jars this evening including some occassional muching along the way. Thrilled! Not really sure what to do.....but be thankful! This project has exceded my expectations as you can see just a wee bit! With a wicked looking second flush already poking its head up from the back jungle......its gonna be a nice fall season....

Second Flush Update: The bed is again exploding aproximately 8 days after the first run. Groupings are more spread out this time, and a little smaller, but are forming in very dense clusters. Counted 23 fruits in one colony last night. The first picture is after we removed 2 huge groupings from the bed. Couldn't shrink the pictures down small enough, so sorry for lack of other good shots. A note to Jeremy Davis.......no pasturazation was used for the medium. Some spawn was carefully distributed in each layer of medium. I went heavy on the vermiculite/straw on top so no birdseed was showing. Haven't had any squirrel or animal problems so far......best of luck to ya!

The hurricane rains have just spurred growth even more, the raised bed has good drainage so the downpour isn't an issue.....everythings just getting super saturated   It doensn't really get cold here till november so I'm hoping for an extended ride!

Ferns and fungus are natural moist, shade loving companions...... they share an interesting similarity of both reproducing by spore. The fern was already holding court there and seemed to be a native grounding for the spot. It seems to be happier lately and even richer green with all the water, love and manure. Its a good disguise as well....the few people that see the bed out of flush think its seedbed for young (fern) sporelings..

Jeremy -

Just made a separate extension today on the raised bed for a new batch of EQ spawn. Here's what I did for the beds - In the front of the bed I built the bricks off an existing cobblestone edge. You could just as easily use brick(s) or cinderblock, rock, board ect. for a border edge. The soil is mostly clay so I just excavated all soil till 2 inches below the brick. Then I broke up the bottom clay (the floor of the bed) so it would drain and added around and inch of horse manure/shavings on top. Then I layered with spawn, straw, wormcasings, manure again....then repeat until around a 6" substrate is formed. You want good drainage, laying it on top of any decent soil, gravel or sand would be fine. I would remove or flip grass over from an area, because it will readily grow into your rich moist bed if left there. My bed is nicely shaded under an ancient Pecan tree, so it stays fairly moist, thus the mold on the back fence. I believe if you create a balanced healthy enviroment, your crops are naturally resistant to pathogen and pest invaders, so I havent had any problems with animals or insects. The mushrooms hardly even attract slugs and snails even when the DE has washed away! If you live in a drier area close to a faucet you can bury a soaker hose in the substrate hooked up to a battery powered timer for automatic irrigation. Water well every few days and the bed takes care of itself from this point- Glad to help, good luck

JD - heres a pic of the newest EQ bed. You can see it coming off the left of the Golden Teacher bed. The Fern kind of devides the new equadors from the teachers. The teachers are again mounting a good run - 30 oz. total yield from the second flush-

Hey Bunny-

Well I haven't duplicated the Golden teacher results yet.......as the EQ bed was just planted a week ago. I keep ya posted though! Both beds took about the same ingredients. Bricks were free from my yard for the bed edge.

For the rest-

Soaker hose (optional)was 6 bucks.
1 mini bale of straw from michaels was 4,
2 40lb. bags worm castings @ 6 - I get em from a wholesale nursery
Horse manure was free from the stables
2 bags vermiculite @ 4 each
6 qt of WBS spawn???
plenty of luv!

So each bed runs about $25.00, without a hose or inoculation costs. Not a bad deal for the output of such an endeavor- Potency was right up there with indoor grown batches I've tried. If your climate is still warm enough - go for it!

Update: The teacher bed has been dormant after the third flush except for the occassional fruit here and there. The new equador project should be breaking ground any day here. Its been about 23 days since spawning......so I will update when things start
