First Time Attempt at Growing - New Question
    #4543297 - 08/16/05 05:46 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

Hello everybody, this is my first post, but I've been reading all I can.

Anyways, so AFOAF is theoretically attempting his first grow and has a couple of questions.
First some background:
24 Jars were PCed and the PFTek was followed to inoculate 17 Jars (the others had gotten some water in them and were too wet.) 9 were done with Treasure Coast and 8 with B+. It is now 17 days after inoculation. The B+ seems to be growing more cottony whereas the Treasure Coast is more stringy (rhyzomorphic?)

Questions:
1) Should my friend be worried about condensation build up in the jars and can it help remedy this (if it is bad) by lowering the humidity where the jars are kept? This seems to be more noticable in the B+ jars.

2) What would be the best thing to do with 1 cake of each strain (so can't case 2 cakes into 1 casing) in the least expensive way possible after the jars are fully colonized?

Pictures will be posted once I find and download a program to compress the file sizes. Also, any advice or whatever anyone has feel free to add.

Here are some pictures to help illustrate.

Two Jars: The Top one is Treasure Coast (1 spot), the Bottom one is B+ (3 Spots.)

your seeming to get slow colonization.. you either packed your sub too tight or its too wet. incubator rH isnt an easy thing to use as a tool for that. i suggest keeping your rH at 65 or 70 in your incubator. whats your temp for incubation anyway?

These were two of the slower going ones out of the whole crop. Sadly I don't know what the rH or actual temperature is. It is safe to assume the conditions are less than ideal, but these two cakes are a side experiment so worrying too much about them isn't necessary. Hopefully more complete pictures and information will be available in about a week.

do you have the dry verm layer on top of the cakes?
if so take the foil and any tape over the innoc holes off. this will allow the jars to have some gas exchange and kick that myc in the ass to get growing faster.
good luck
peace

condensation isnt a bad thing in jars either, my B+ jars had a lot of and they came out fine.  Bupwards brings up a good point, no need for foil or tape if you have a dry verm layer as a barrier.  I say if you take it off and it shows no signs of really speeding up flip em for a day or two and see what happens.  Could be a buildup of co2 which needs to be released.

BTW are you a dj or a musician?  Methinks i see an 8 track in those pics

OK so the foil is off, though I didn't think that was as big a deal as taking the tape off (which there wasn't any.) We'll see in the next couple days if they speed up.

And good eye spotting that 4 track... musician here, mainly play the bass guitar.

ah, my eyes deceive me, i could have sworn that was an 8.  I used to play bass back in the day.  Waaay back, so far back id be lucky if i could pluck out come as you are   I stick with the turntables now, but ill play bass when my friend who is a drummer needs someone to practice with.

It's been a couple days, no new pics (had to return camera,) and I have a question.

The jars were flipped upside down to increase air exchange, and this seems to have sped up colonization. However, the spreading edge of the Treasure Coast jar on the bottom seems thicker than the rest of the bottom. Is this a bad thing or something that shouldn't be worried about? Sorry if this is just a newb question and thanks in advance.

Even though I am not doing anything, I have edited out the company (perhaps you could edit the quote of me as well) in case they have a problem being linked with theoretical grows.

no its not bad.
the bottom takes the longest to get colonized anyway.
good job and good luck!!
