secret sanctums of nature
    #4562687 - 08/21/05 03:13 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

ive discovered long ago the wonders of Polygonum cuspidatum.
an invasive specie widely considered a noxious weed.
dispite this, i love them.  one of my favorite land transformers.
with a knife one can create massive pathways and sanctums within these forests of knotweed.

ive known places where they fill an achre of lumpy terrein, creating a place where large groups of people can gather and congregate, great for parties or spiritual escape.

the dead stalks in the fall ive seen used to create decorative perimeter fencing for outdoor raves and tiki bar roofs.

dispite warnings, i intend to plant this invasive weed on my propoerty. i intend to landscape an area with deep ruts for walking, and plant the weeds on the elevated parts.  to produce a maze of sorts, each path leading to a different area of my property. perhaps a clearing with a poppy patch, perhaps a small playhouse in the style of a witches hut for my daughter,  perhaps a crows nest to climb above the canopy  and look out.

the entrance would be carefully manacured to be an arch trellis with morning glories, or perhaps some other more perrenial vine. anyway, here are some pics of my little getaway i constructed in a nearby feild.
approaching the entrance

the entrance hidden, and unasuming, one would pass on by,

once past that, a huge chamber opens up, large enough to walk about easily, pathways spider from chamber to chamber creating a fort any kid would love.

lookinbg back towards the exit from the main chaber you get an idea of the scape.

lying on the floor looking up, you can see 5the arching and fractal nature of the canopy

sitting on the floor, you can see the base of the colunar plant trunks

i intend to make a hill (fill from my basement foundation), and cut rusts into it in the center of this forest. perhaps thre crows nest will be atop it.
i have no doubt my daughter will enjoy it, tho maybe not as uch as me.

you and your daughter alone in the woods? sounds fun.

magnolia trees also do that cool canopy/sanctuary thing. found alot covering the peaks and ridges of the appalachin. its always so quiet up there...
