Agaricus find, take a stab at id...
    #4562176 - 08/21/05 12:26 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hi all,

Found this mushroom today:

Characteristics:
- No apparent bruising
- Smell is mushroomy, but there's also a hint of an unpleasant smell present
- Found growing under coniferous trees, but oak trees also grow in the direct vicinity. Soil is probably slightly acidic, not very nutrient rich. Specimens were growing between last year's leaf litter (oak), directly from the sandy soil.
- Size of the taller (cut) mushroom: about 6cm/2.5"
- Spore color: unknown; only young specimens with the veil still attached were found.
- Genus: Agaricus, I suppose.

Temperatures are between 20oC (68F) and 28oC (82F) during daytime, but drop to about 12oC (54F) ~ 16oC (61F) at night. We've had rain during the last week or so, but nothing much has fallen during the last two days or so.

If you need more info, please ask. I just summed up some data that I think could be relevant.

Any ideas?

I'd probably start with one of the species close to A. diminutivus. Unfortunately, Agaricus is one of the more difficult genera to identify mushrooms in.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks for your reply! Indeed, Agaricus doesn't seem to be one of the easier genera... I looked into some info on a. diminutivus, it seems pretty close. I'm afraid we'll never know exactly what species this is, but I'll try to check on the site where I found these later this week. Perhaps I'll be able to gather some more info.

I'd wait a day or two to see what they look more mature
