Underwater heater problem
    #4562080 - 08/21/05 09:47 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

the average temp in any given room here is 67f. I had to build an incubator. I got a lil submersible aquarium heater that had some suction pads on it and 2 big Rubbermaid containers, put some water in the first one and four half pint jars in the corners so if the water got too low the top tub wouldn't fall in the second tub too far. the suction cups aren't exactly doing their job, sometimes they let go and the heater bobs up a lil bit, I'm worried it might burn the tub. any suggestions on keeping the heater down?

have you tried any other suction cups? or maybe wedge something else that won't burn between the heater and the 2nd tub. or a weight of some sort to hold it down.

is the heater touching the bottom of the 1st tub? if it is and it doesn't burn, it prolly wont burn the 2nd one either..

my 2 cents

hey thanks, awsome suggestions, it's not touching "yet". i'll just keep an eye on it, if it does touch i'll try puting a towl in between, it's not touching the first tub cuz the suction cups are on the bottom of the heater. maybe i'll rig up a glue/string weighty contraption or something...

i was thinking of the same thing earlier, i havent built my terrerium yet, but i was worried about the same thing... it has 2 suction thingies on the bottom of the heater just like yours.. so what i planned to do was to just use some silicone glue and use some duck tape on top of that just to feel safe..... tape that shiiiittt reall good, u dont want to have any dumb accidents.....

go to home depot and get some adjustable fittings. the kind that have a heavy screw on them. tighten around heater and it will sink to bottom.

If the suction cups aren't working and you don't want it permanently affixed, I used plastic ties and a couple objects used as weights. Just don't use anything metal if you don't want to clean out rust.

Put two half pint, wide-mouth jars on each side of your incubator to provide a buffer, so that your tub won't rest on it, and then use something (two kitchen knives work) bridging between the jars on each side to keep it down. Just like the man does to me.
