Casing questions

I've just done my first casing. I had a foil pan that is 8" x 8" x 2 1/2". I took 3 jars and crumbled them all into the bottom of the pan. I think it was about an inch, maybe 1 1/2". Then I took some 50/50+ and put a 1/2" layer over the top. Covered it with two layers of foil and poked a few holes in it, then put it away. Did I do that right?
I've got 7 more jars. How should I do them? Should I get bigger pans? What do you guys use? Also, what's the suggested temp to keep the casing at (for the 3 days)?

sounds like you did alright.
case them, fruit them as cakes, or imo spawn to h poo.
cased brf cakes, incubate at the same temp as jar colonization. for spawn to poo, room temp is fine as the poo creates alot more heat as it colonizes. i have been using 8"x13 1/2"x4" lasagna pans. work good so far but i think i am going to switch to some kind of a plastic tub because of the damage caused to the tin pans. peace

Right on. I've got serious access to cow poo. What do you mean when you say "spawn to"? Does that mean mix a crumbled PF jar in with the poo? Then once it's colonized add casing to it? How much better is it? I know cubies normally grow in the wild on cow poo (we used to pick them all the time). (sorry for the noob question)

no reason to be sorry bro, we were all noobs to this at one point in time, hell i am still a noob as well. yes crumbling and mixing it with the poo is called spawning. cow poo in nature has a totally different relationship with the myc than it does indoors. the myc is already colonized underground outdoors, cow shits on top of it, the myc gets the nutes colonizing into the poo and then fruits from it. cow poo is not the best because it lacks the fiber that h poo has to help keep it light and fluffy. you could mix some chopped straw and vermiculite with the cow poo to lighten it up some. i would try and go with h poo if you can though, lots of it around for the scooping. best of luck peace

I thought the ratio should be 4:1. I was just trying to stick to that. Should I have used less? I've gotta check out the h poo thing (guess c poo is not as good ) ... I've got about 5 days till the rest of my jars are ready.

i haven't ever measured the spawn to poo ratio. i have just broken up what looked to be good and gone with it. 2 pints in those pans gives a nice even distribution of the spawn throughout the poo, at least imo.
sure the recommended is a 4:1 or 5:1 something along those lines.
5 days would give you plenty of time to get some good weathered poo and get it ready to use. best of luck peace

After casing the trays you can return them to the incubator (82-84F.) Read my pinning strategy to answer some of the questions you haven't thought of yet. If followed you'll be guaranteed success first time around. GL

What's better poo or staw? I just don't think I'm going to enjoy playing around with poo, then having it smelling up my house.

You'll want to use aged (1yr.) manure which isn't that bad at all. Straw will produce less flushes, if I were you I'd do grain casings first, rye is awesome BTW. GL

About 300lbs. a year (as spawn) You'll have to read a few rye teks before picking one to use. GL
