storing unused substrate.....
    #4559757 - 08/20/05 05:45 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Hey hey. Got a problem. I made my first attempt at mixing substate and everything was a success! My jars are in the cooker right as I type. But I made WAYYYY too much substrate, but don't have enough jars to put it in.....

I do have a sealable container though. SO my question is can I store my BRF and Verm and Water substrate in there for 2-4 weeks until I have more jars available?  I have enough left for another 6 -7 half-pint jars.

If I CAN store it. What are optimal conditions?

Thanks ya!

Definately. I stored mine for a month before I got hold of some syringes. Plus it give you a chance to see if you are sterlizing them correctly. Now I like to wait a couple of days to see if I see any contams growing. If you are worried about them drying out add an extra cc of spore water to them when you inoculate.

I just kept mine in the cupboard where there is very little air movement. I think it helps keep out contams. A closet would work too as long as you don't disturb them .

I just got done making some experimental substrate, and I made a extra jar of it that I wont inoc, just in case there is contams later. Then I will know if it was the inoculation process, or the making and jarring of the substrate.

I'm confused. Why would it matter how you create the substate. You are just going to PC it later and kill the contams later, correct?

I'm mainly worried about the un-pressure cooked stuff keeping it's consistancy and whether or not it will grow mold after a few weeks.

BTW, what part of KY?

There are certain bacterial endospores that a PC won't kill on it's own. That's why you soak or simmer, or bo both before you PC it.

Docs WBS tek is what Im using as a tek currently and I have had no problems with contamination yet. Knock on wood.
