How do I get a better shot with my Digital Camera?

I have a Sony CyberShot 2.0 Megapixel Digital Camera and for the life of me cannot get a good picture of my pf cakes. The flash just lights the whole thing up white and it's hard to get a detailed close-up. The only bright light I can get in the house is the fluorescent one in the bathroom but I don't wanna move my cakes into there and risk contams. Any suggestions on a detailed looking close-up? I know the camera's capable.

I believe its macro focusing range should be around 10 cm. Can you manually turn off the flash?

Well, if the flash just lights the whole thing up white, I'd turn it off and try to use some other source of light. How do you mean - any other light makes it look like crap? Are the pictures too dark, or does everything look red, or what?

They're too dark. If I use a flashlight then the only spot lit is where the light is shining, and even then it's a pale light. Would it be safe to move it to the bathroom counter if I lysol it [the counter lol] and take a quick pic?

well, you want to have dim light, and a behind upper bright focused light, if you plan on zooming, and your using that kine of digital camera, you better use a tripod. choose the real sunlight no flash option, if you set up the lighting like I suggested, otherwise, try a couple different kines of flash, you have full flash, flash dim, and daytime flash, and maybe some others. 2.0 megapixal is great for closeups, just don't zoom.

Either: 1) Cover the flash with a piece of paper or something.
or
2) Find some method of steadying the camera. A tripod is best. Leaning up against something, using your arms to brace the camera, or using a beanbag can be helpful - anything to keep the camera still. It can also help to press the shutter and hold until the picture is taken. A lot of low-light digital camera pictures are ruined by camera shake.
Good luck.
