Bales of pot found stashed in mangroves August 19, 2005 - nbc6.net
MIAMI -- Police are investigating after 20 bales of marijuana were found near the beach in Key Biscayne Friday morning.
Two biologists who were doing sea turtle research found about 20 bales of marijuana hidden among the mangroves at Bill Baggs State Park and called authorities.
Police said that the bales, which weigh about 60 pounds apiece, are worth about $1.2 million.
Investigators said that early reports that cocaine had also been found in the area were not true.
There was an early theory that the bales had washed up on the beach, but investigators said they believe instead that someone dropped off the bales and then someone else dragged them the 400 yards from the shore to the spot where they were hidden. Police said they believe someone was going to pick up the marijuana from the hiding place and distribute it.
