Does anyone have an article about this when the plan was first announced? Everyone has been talking about this for the past week, but I never even heard about it before then. I'm interested in why Israel is doing this. What reasons did they give?

Yeah, I knew it's been awhile. I remember hearing about it during the spring, so the April date looks about right.

I would imagine it had something to do with coming to their senses and realizing that they're safer by not making enemies. If only America would reach the same conclusion.

Some people say it has to do with showing the world a) their supposed good faith b) that doing the same thing with the whole West Bank (hundreds of thousands of colonists, compared to a few thousands in Gaza) would be impossible.
Go figure. I'm still quite amazed by the fact that it was Sharon who took the decision, and I still don't trust the guy.

Neither does Netanyahu, which I suppose is a good sign.

Three good reasons 1. The Gaza is no longer needed as a buffer between Israel and Egypt. The Gaza is now the problem and Israel and the government of Egypt have reached an accomodation. 2. 8,000 settlers are sucking up far too much security resources. 3. Millions of Palestinians who can never be assimilated into Israel because that would mean the end of a Jewish majority of voters. In order for the Gaza to ever be part of Israel it would have to be purged of Palestinians. That will never happen. Next best is to just cut it loose, like they did with the Sinai.

Indeed, all good reasons.
I would also like to add this is a very clever move my Sharon.
This sacrifice helps maintain his relationship with the US.
Also be removing only some 8000 settlers at a cost of approx 2$bn he has established the vast cost of removing the settlements from the West Bank and East Jerusalem with populations close to 200,000 each under similar terms.
100$bn is around the GDP of indebted Israel, so it can't afford it and I doubt the US taxpayer is going to bend over of that one, like they did this time.

I'm probably just being paranoid but it just seems really suspicious that Sharon would suddenly give in like this after decades of fighting over that piece of land. I'm certain it wasn't out of good will; there'd have to be some benefit to Israel. I suppose what zappa said makes sense.

I couldn't have picked better reasons if I wanted to, myself.
