    #4556022 - 08/19/05 06:18 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

well guys i'm new here , and i ahve been wantingto try some shrooms for a while, and for a while have seen some in my back yard so i though i should post here to see if they were good for eating..

Where i found them: backyard growing in the grass
Color: white-ish, cream-ish, the gills are sorta a light brown
Climate: i live in amarillo texas so its hott in the summer and we do get a lot of rain...

I just mowed the lawn yesterday, adn they grow deep in the grass, but now they are exposed, and ia hve a dog that shits alot in my yard.

theres the one i picked:

these are how they are in the ground, they all grow in a close proximity to each other.

PS-i ahve never eaten/picked, so if they are edible, do i let them dry out first after i pick um or eat um right after i pick um?
Sorry if i'm such a newbie to this. If you need more pic tell me!

thanks for all your guys help!

Mushrooms won't grow in dog shit unless your dog is a vegan. I doubt they're active but you'll need to post some more information on them before getting a response. I've seen a lot of people get flamed for just picking a mushroom and posting a pic.

Accurate mushroom descriptions

It is critical that you describe mushrooms fully and accurately in order to get a proper identification.

A good picture of the mushrooms is invaluable, but not required.
Along with the pictures YOU ARE REQUIRED to provide the following data:

* Habitat (where [woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude] and what [soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?)] does it grow on)
* Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
* Characteristics of the stem (length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
* Characteristics of the cap (diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
* Spore print color (very important!)
* Color that the mushroom bruises
* Scent of the mushroom
* Anything else you might find important

they look like some kind of agaricus, a rather tough genus to identify to species. it contains some species that are toxic and some that are edible. those look past the stage they'd be good to eat even if they were an edible species though.

we need more info if you'd like to try to narrow it down more, specifically spore color, and any observations of a bruising reaction and smell or lack thereof.

DH

ok, i took a spore print, the color where it is dark is very deep brown, and around it is a light brown almost grey in some spots..

And by what i am reading these ARE edible?
And if they are do i need to dry them out first or eat um when wet?

thanks for all the help!

not all Agaricus species are edible, some will make you very sick. like I said they're one of the harder genuses to ID to species.

the edible species are best when young, your mushrooms look like they're starting to dry out already. edible agarics should be eaten fresh and cooked.

but those don't look like any of the choice edible species I know of, you should toss them out.

Well jeez I would say your pictures are pretty darn clear for a first id. If I were you, I would settle for agaricus and move on to your next mushroom and post some more pictures. One thing that might be helpful is a COMPLETE picture of the stem showing the base--sometimes the tapering of the stem can help describe it. Good luck!
