Crash Course in Sumac?
    #4555516 - 08/19/05 03:24 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I googled and googled but couldn't find anything definitive showing side by side poison and smooth sumac comparisons. Is the most noticeable difference the berry color (Smooth being brown/red, Poison white)? I have a bunch of suspected smooth sumac berries. Can anyone recommend the best time to harvest them?

why would you harvest sumac? I have non-poison sumac litterally everywere in my backyard like 30 feet high and has red berries

Native Americans used it medicinally, and the berries supposedly make a nice lemonade-like beverage.

if you want to make kinnick-kinnick, harvest the leaves when they turn red. if you want to make lemonade, harvest the berries when they are bright red. you can also use the hollow branches for pipe stems!

Yes, smooth and staghorn sumac berries are red, poison sumac's berries are white. The best time to harvest is right about now.

Thanks...wouldn't harvest time vary regionally though? None of the leaves have turned, and the berries are dull brown, not bright red.
