case layer?

I never totally understood what exactly serves the purpose of a case layer? My only understanding is it helps to keep moisture in and helps to serve as a barrier for contams. Also, should the case layer serve as a food source for mycelium growth, but wouldn't this defeat the purpose to help keep contams out?

It should have no nutrients. And does what you said, it also provides more water to the fruiting shrooms.

Number one it is not a contam barrier really, it's most notable purpose is to provide the best possible micro climate for primordial formation. Other than than it provides somewhat of a moisture reserve for developing fruitbodies. Simple enough, GL and welcome TLO.
BTW it also provides microbes for certain edibles to fruit.
