Possible problem with innoc'd jars.
    #4554456 - 08/19/05 04:37 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

When I pressure cooked my jars, somehow the dry layer of verm got damp, what can I do to prevent this? also, are these jars gonna be ruined?? did I just waste the last of my spores?

You may have put too much water in the PC, this will bubble up the sides and into the jars. If you have just taken the jars out they may appear wet and dry up after cooling. Hopefully they will be ok, as long as the moisture content is not messed up

Try covering the lids with tin foil next time. Wet verm can easily contaminate.

That does happen from time to time due to the moisture already in the jars. My "dry" verm layer often comes out damp after pcing...and I know there is absolutely no water getting in. It tends to dry up within a day or so. If it is completely soaked and you could see a good buildup of water in your jar, then water got in. otherwise, don't worry about it.

Usually if the top is not "secure" enough, the BRF inside will actually cook due to the water. If the BRF looks fine, then don't worry about it. (this is assuming you are using PF).

I Just inoculated today and when I removed the tin foil from the jars there were water droplets on top of the lids....... So I guess im in the same boat?

basically the whole thing would look like black/brown mush. you would not see any space between the verm and the brf(like you did when you created the jar). and the bigger chunks of the brf would actually turn white and expand very big.

heheh I made the mistake once when I forgot to secure a lid to one of my jars. if water got in, believe me, you would know hehe.

otherwise, just leave the jar for a day, if the verm got wet from moisture all ready in the jars, it will dry out fairly quickly, and you will be able to see the verm moving around on the surface when you move the jar around.

GL TO YA!

your pc should have 1" of water in it, with the jars in it.

well, you want the water to touch the bottom parts of the jars, usually no more than 25% of the jar submerged...1" of water with the jars in it.

basically with the jars in the pc with water, put a ruler down and it should measure an inch. It doesn't sound like you had too much water in there at all, so just give it a day and the dry verm layer will be dry again.

it is perfectly normal to see some condensation inside of the jars after pcing...especially when the jars are cooling and the water vapor inside of the jar is turning back into water. everything sounds fine...just be patient. Pics always help.
