earliest to initiate pinning

well, seems like my friend's luck just doesn't end. as a last ditch effort to get some shroomies before the 24th, he took 2 of his half colonized 1/2 pint jars, dumped out the uncolonized portions, and cased the remainder. the bottom layer is 1/2 inch of vermicultie, there is about an inch of substrate, and a real thin (1/4 - 1/2 ") casing layer. this was done to speed up colonization. after sitting in a warm (81 - 82 *) terrarium with foil over the top overnight, the top is about 10% colonized! sweet. so anyways, back to my friend's question: how soon can he take the foil off and start giving them light? yields/contamination/quality all take a back seat to speed for this casing, remember. thanks!!!!

one more thing.. now that my curiousity is piqued: does the mycelium that gets light somehow get the message to the rest of the network that hey i've hit the surface time to start pinnin' or will only exposed surfaces generate pins?

While you will probably get a harvest of some sort, it is best to let the whole jars colonize completely because the mycelial network will be more complex(and more contam resistant), making fruiting quicker...your timeframe isn't up to you; they will only fruit when they are ready. Why are you on such a limited time frame? It is hard to have success in this hobby without a certain amount of patience... Regular intervals(2-6 hrs/day) of light will initiate pinning and provide direction of growth. Indirect sunlight or low wattage bulbs are sufficient..

thanks for the tips. yah my friend realizes patience is important, that is why he is saving the rest of his jars.. he's not an idiot, just really REALLY wants at least a few before then. great, now i'm even trying to defend my imaginary friend's rep. heh. ok that's it. I GROW MUSHROOMS!! (*gasp*) anyways, thanks for the tips! so do you think that by not giving the network a chance to get really nicely established i will end up getting faster results from my other jars? wouldn't that be ironic.. well i guess it will only be 3 or 4 more days until they are colonized 100% then we'll see :D **me later on** heh so after all that i grow shrooms shit i get curious and read up on busts and this is the first i've heard of the bluelight and hive busts.. um.. to all the dea guys out there.. did i mention that the ones i grow are, of course, harmless oyster mushroom? uhh yeah the new BRF oyster tek i'm gonna be a pioneer i tell ya

You know whats really sad. I got 12 jars and only 3 are showing signs of colonization. Im kinda pissed off. But glad that atleast something is showing up. But actually its only been like ...what, a week? lol...I know the feeling. Once you do something exciting like this, its just impossible to sit and wait of something so special :*)
