Sleeping problem
    #4549641 - 08/17/05 11:35 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I had a magazine that once described some sleeping problems and wat to do to fix
them.
My problem is i cant find this magazine and was wondering if anyone out there
knows my problem and how to fix it.
Anyways at times my feet or hands feel funny and i have to keep them moving to
stop or make the feeling bareable.
it sux cause ill lay down and my just constantly be moving and theres no way to
fall asleep doing that.
Reason i bring this up is casue i was just watching tv and the same problem was
happening and its driving me crazy.

Any help would be appretiated.

What do you mean your hands and feet feel funny? Do you get a pins & needles feeling in them or what?

This is known as Restless Leg Syndrome, where a person falling asleep experiences spasms in the legs and feet and sort of a pins-and-needles feeling. From another web site: "A person with restless leg syndrome should be evaluated for a deficiency in magnesium, and electrolytes or trace minerals."

I get this too. I don't consider it a disorder because it's very common. But if it bothers you that much you can look up more info about it.

whoa that's weird about the magnesium... i have this disease which is said to sometimes be caused by magnesium deficiencies.... and i definitely have problems falling totally asleep, i'll get myoclonic jerks and i get so uncomfortable that i have to roll over and try to NOT fall asleep until i do.

like i can get into a near sleep state in 5-10 minutes sometimes [usually alpha/theta], but once i'm there i have to stay in it for a really long time like 15-20 minutes of just dicking around waiting for my mind to shut off, i can't consciously will myself to go to sleep or i just get the myoclonic jerks and wake up.

(i consciously induce sleep usually otherwise i can't fall asleep because i'll think too much... i just chase my thoughts around, interact with them, but don't ponder them, and try to sort of "build a bridge" of thought associations by tracing the subconscious thoughts and symbolic stuff back up to what conscious thought caused it)

the "muscle throbs" you describe do sound like myoclonic jerks to me though, as far as i can tell.

Sometimes when I'm trying to fall asleep I get an irresistible urge to move my arms or legs, instead of keeping them still. Is that what you're talking about?

I have had that before and once I started supplementing with magnesium the problem never came back. Eighty percent of us are deficient in magnesium. Also getting some strenuous exercise during the day will help, if not eliminate the problem.
