should i dunk it?
    #4551291 - 08/18/05 11:18 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

I just picked my first flush of YB off a block of bulk substrate i was planning on caseing but never got around to it. the first flush turned out A-ok, but after a week or so of neglect its gotten pretty damn dry in there and the substrate has pulled away from the sides of the tub. I've heard that dunking can help to re-hydrate the substrate for better future flushes. What's the best way to do this without getting it too wet/making a mess/screwing something up? After i dunk should i put some sort of thin caseing layer on it? or will it not colonize this now that its in the fruiting cycle?
Thanks for your input.

substrates will always shrink away during/after the first flush. I usually just use casings and have not really used bulk subs too much. If you want to dunk it, you could fill the container with water and let it sit for a couple of hours, then put a screen over the container and flip it to get the water out so that the sub doesn't fall apart.

you could probably just fill in the sides where it has shrunken away with some moist verm.

Adding a casing layer would not work for you right now because your bulk sub is already in the fruiting stages. GL TO YA.

:mushroom2:  You could also mix verm with peat (50/50) and add some crushed oyster shell to it to buffer the pH.  That's the best casing soil I've used.  :mushroom2:

you want to add that to the sides where it has shrunk away, not on the top layer. it is too late for a casing layer.

Why wouldn't a casing help with moisture at this point? RK has stated in some of his grow logs that he used no casing layer until after the first flush. I don't know how much a casing at this point would help, but it certainly wouldn't hurt.

I think it would hurt. the casing layer will not colonize because it is past the vegitative growth stage. all that will do is prevent light from hiting the surface, and I don't think it will fruit.

I could be wrong because i've never tried creating a casing after the first flush when I use to do bulk subs, but I don't think that will be helpful what so ever. I think it will hurt pinning more than help it. I don't remember RK saying anything about that, do you have a link?

After the dunk he should have plenty of moisture and can mist to keep it up.

I just drained my caseing and it looks like it was thirsty, i poured about a half gallon in there and when i drained it nowhere near that amount came out. I noticed a bunch of aborts/knots that were under the fuzzy mycelium at the top, should i pick them off or just let them be? I think i'm gonna go ahead and put that little bit of dry verm on like in this thread here
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/4036693/an//page//vc/1
i figure its worth a shot

don't use dry verm, it will just suck the moisture right back out of the substrate. if anything use some moist verm.

as far as a casing layer on it now, i have added more casing on after a couple of flushes and not had any problems, of course they were only thin layers 1/8" to 1/4". the myc came right back through it and fruited again nicely.
best of luck
peace
