orange in my cakes...
    #4518580 - 08/10/05 02:39 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

the last time i crumbled and cased, when i broke open my cakes after dunking the inside of all 7 of them was slightly orange, especially close to the verm (pf tek). they were all Puerto Rican and 6 were 100% colonized and the last had a little bit left uncolozied that even when i waited, it never finished. I am almost positive that this was not a contam like lipstick mold or anything as i did a sort of grain to grain transfer, but with pf cakes and when i cased, most of the chunks of mycelium recovered and had very nice thick rhizo growth. i g2g'ed 28 new pf jars (wanted to get rid of my brf so i can start on wbs) and of them, 7 successfully started colonizing again. the ones that did not were generally the most orange. Those chunks simply dried out and died. This only matters because in my 3 50/50 peat moss casings, a few of the crumbled crunks of myc never started growing again, which invited contams pissing me off greatly as i had never had such nice looking growth in a casing. Soooooo, after a very long post does anyone have an idea what this orange hue is? i was thinking maybe it was enzymes secreted by the myc to digest nutes and the cakes weren't as colonized as they appeared. i would post pictures, but i didn't have a digital camera when this all went down.

i've had some orange from really beat vermiculite in my cake. the cake was a straw bag and it only showed the orange/rust color on the 5th flush (1 mushroom and a mutant at that). i doubt that is your problem in this scenario.
