Do fruiting chambers have to be air tight?
    #4550888 - 08/18/05 09:05 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

cuz my rubbermaid has a tiny gap between the lid and the container, just small tho, but the lid goes over and beside the edge of the container, you know how bins are on the sides.

Im gonna say yes because how does it hold moisture? It needs to be humid in your chamber and if there is a place for air to escape so does the moisture. I had this problem because I'm useing duct tape to hold a lid on that doesnt fit my PMP i fixed my leak and now i got pins before it wouldent pin for anything! So even if its not necessary i would advise it =)

You wouldn't want it to be totally air tight.. You just want the chamber to be closed up enough to hold the humidity.

Well the pump in the PMP does the air exchange for you right? Why wouldent you want it to be air tight?

I'm not familiar with that sort of setup..I've only dealt with martha closets.
But if the pmp does provide enough air exchange then it wouldnt be a problem to have it air tight. Just saying it never hurts to get more air exchange.

If a PMP were airtight and you put a pump in it, the pressure from the pump would create away for air to escape somewhere, then it wouldn't be airtight anymore. Very small openings aren't enough to drop humidity, most PMP's have a few small holes drilled in the top and they are stuffed with polyfil.

If you are using PF cakes, yes I think air tight is best to keep the near 100% humidity you want. You still need a lot of air exchange, so fan it out alot. If you are casing, a small hole should be OK.

im using pf cakes but im casing them though. casings dont' need as high of humidity as do cakes so maybe it's alrite. since the gap is so small, would it be okay to use scotch tape everytime i close it? that stuff is cheap so why not, and a hole in each corner couldn't be that bad eh?
