Canadian cops make massive ecstasy bust

Alberta police announce record ecstasy bust
August 18, 2005 - ctv.ca

Alberta police have announced the largest-ever ecstasy bust in the province's history, preventing more than 213,000 pills from hitting the streets.

Alberta's Integrated Response to Organized Crime unit, or IROC, seized the drugs during a raid in the city's northeast in June, police said Wednesday.

"If this ecstasy was purchased on the street or at a rave, it goes for approximately $20 a pill, which would bring it up to $4.26 million," said Staff Sgt. Barry Balerud.

The raid, dubbed Project Intrigue, capped an eight-month probe that began after police learned a huge drug shipment was headed to Calgary from Vancouver.

Investigators said they did not disclose the bust earlier because doing so would have hampered the investigation.

Police expressed concern that traffickers laced the 250-milligram tablets with 20 milligrams of methamphetamine, making it even more addictive.

Ottawa has recently introduced more stringent penalties for using meth, a highly addictive substance known as poor man's cocaine, in an attempt to decrease trafficking and drug use.

While Balerud said the bust is a noteworthy hindrance in the drug pipeline to the province, it will take time to determine whether an arm of organized crime has been impaired.

"Alberta is booming. That's what's going to attract these kinds of criminals," Balerud told The Globe and Mail.

During the June bust, police also seized $25,000 in cash, a semi-automatic rifle, body armour, two stun guns and a high-capacity magazine containing 19 rounds of ammunition.

Thirty-two-year-old Hui Xu of Calgary, also known as Phillip Tu, will be in court Sept. 1 to face eight charges relating to the raid, including trafficking.
