According to this article http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-gas17.html gas prices are just rising and rising and rising...
Can anyone explain to me why it costs so damn much? I'm not too educated with the oil situation over there, I figure "Hell, we practically took over Iraq, why can't we get oil cheaper now?"

I was driving back from Schwagstock from Missouri, and was filling up and looked up and it said 2.65/gallon. I was freaked out thinking that Missouri gas is crazy expensive and just drove farther thinking it'd get cheaper, but it only got more expensive.
I saw a Citgo in Chitown that had regular unleaded for 3.10!!!!

True, but I miss those days of $1.35 a gallon lol. $20 used to fill my tank, now only about 3/4.

Isn't there ANY way to create oil? With all this fancy scientific machinery, I'm sure they could pull something out of their asses! Hell Albert Hoffman synthesized LSD, let's synthesize some oil lol.

my answer... A tariff is a tax placed on imported and/or exported goods, sometimes called a customs duty. A Protective tariff, usually applied to imported goods, is intended to artificially inflate prices of imports and "protect" domestic industries from foreign competition. This means oil prices are set by the cost to produce domestic oil.
The real question is, what recent changes have made the expense of producing domestic oil rise?
The rise in price per barrel has made it cost effective to drill more domestic wells meaning that our tarrifs are higher than the cost of domestic oil. Here in Texas you can see atleast 6 or 7 defficks drilling wells with one glance accross the countryside. (a derricks is not to be confused with a pump jack)
When the domestic oil business booms it's simply because high tarrifs.
Bush is an oil tycoon, it only makes sense that he'd create an oil boom.

and bush doesn't even care...he's fucking rich and won't have to worry about this stuff like we will. along with all those other people who buy street tanks, SUVs, that only get like 10-15mpg. of course if i were rich, i'd probably buy one too though.

it's nuts right now here near Fort Worth. There's an oil basin called the Barnett Shale Play. it's huge and spans a huge part of texas. it's one of the untapped oil plays because the porous rock that the oil is found in has low porosity. This low porosity shale doesn't retain pressure as long and requires doctoring techniques. High pressure sand fracturing. Water and sand pumped into the well head at very high pressure fractures the ground at zones (a depth in the well that contains high oil concentration) these fractures then are quickly filled with sand allowing more oil to reach the well and allowing a pressure pocket allowing higher daily production..
It's pretty fascinating. but because high oil prices it's now a profitable business to drill the oil in this play using these new techniques.
