Mycelium or Cobweb?
    #4547988 - 08/17/05 08:23 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

This is what I have written in my grow log so far:

My First Grow Log (and my first grow)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday, August 13th, 2005 - Day 1 -

I PC'ed eight 1/2 pint jars today...

Using 1/2 pint jars, Brown Rice Flour, and Vermiculite

I will let them cool overnight.

The strain that I'm using is Cambodian...

These syringes are homemade by a (very) trusted friend

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday, AUgust 14th, 2005 - Day 2 -

The jars were completely cool to the touch this afternoon when I innocuated.

It was approximately 12 hours of complete cooling of the PC and jars before the jars were taken out.

I inoculated 8 PF style jars today with the Cambodian Strain, didnt shake the first syringe properly so went back and injected another 1cc per jar of properly shaken spore water.

I oust'ed the bathroom which is where I inoculated at

I used 91% Rubbing Alcohol to wipe down the surface of the area that I used to inoculate the jars at.

I am using the Tub in Tub (TiT) method to incubate my jars.

I put 1/4 cup - 1/2 cup Clorox Bleach in the water in the bottom tote to insure no unwanted bacterial/fungi/algae growth.

I have my Titanium Unbreakable Fish Tank Heater set at 82 degrees Farenheit to initialize colonization in my cakes.

I ended up using 2 10 cc spore syringes for 8 PF style 1/2 pint jars (seems like a lot)

Although the spore syinges clogged up a few times (about 4) and I ended up squirting an estimated number of 5 ccs down the drain.

I put Breathable Hypoallergenic gauze-type tape over each of the holes on each canning jars.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Monday, August 15, 2005 - Day 3 -

No signs of growth as expected.

Temperature is between 81 degrees Farenheit and 86 degrees Farenheit.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday, August 16th, 2005 - Day 4 -

I bought an Air Pump today, it's only for use on 5 gallons, but it should work.

No signs of colonization today.

I didn't expect any seeing as it's only 2 days after inoculation.

They temps have been staying between 80 and 87 degrees Farenheit.

I've been playing with the fish tank heater to try and get it at the right temperature.

I've been setting it between 80 and 88 degrees Farenheit.

Right now it's on 86 degrees Fareneheit to warm it back up from when it was at 80 Deg. F.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday, August 17th, 2005 - Day 5 -

First Update: 11:33 AM Pacific (california) time -

There is growth in 3 jars, I don't know if it's cobweb or not, but then again like all first growers we haven't seen this stuff first hand.

It's not bright white, it IS more of a gray...

How long do cobwebs take to start?

This would suck if it is cobweb.

I noticed that the growth is under the holes in the lids.

The place where I shot the spores in.

And yes, I did push the needle all the way past the top layer of vermiculite, and well into the BRF/Verm substrate.

=====================

Update - 5:18PM Pacific (california) time -

There is more of this growth, I don't know it looks like Mycelium, the jars are a little wet

There is condensation inside of some of the jars...

Pics below:

Looks like mycelium to me, but then again I'm not experienced in picking out the difference yet.

I just wanted to share a suggestion that I got: it looks like you still have tape over the holes, it has been recommended to me that you leave the inoculation holes open during colonization as the dry vermiculite layer is protection enough.

I zoomed in on the pic....They look fine.....If the growth is slow and steady like 6-9% colonization of the jar per day, it is mycelium and not cobweb.

one common trait of cobweb is the speed at which it multiplies....If you can see the top of the jars and the white strands are lifting off the surface of the cake and growing in the air space, its cobweb...Honestly though, ive done hundreds of jars and havent seen the stuff myself, so im no expert.

That tape is Hypoallergenic gauze-like tape, it's COMPLETELY breathable.

I could wrap my head in 20 rolls of it and still be able to breathe...

Just an expample :P

Do you think it's myc or cobwed..
