Suck the Marrow of Life
    #4547936 - 08/17/05 08:12 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Quote:

Henry Thoreau said:
I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion. For most men, it appears to me, are in a strange uncertainty about it, whether it is of the devil or of God, and have somewhat hastily concluded that it is the chief end of man here to "glorify God and enjoy him forever.

I say YES!

"Most men lead lives of quiet desperation." ~ Thoreau

Not me. I lead one of loud, caucophonous desperation.

DAMN IT! LIFE SUCKS! I HATE IT. WHY ME?

No, no, you read it backwards, dear.

Suck life, not life sucks.

It is worth noting that Thoreau's life in the woods was mostly fiction. He was far from the "sturdy" and "Spartan" like man he portrayed himself as. His home in the deep woods was a mere mile from town. The values he portrays were not the values he lived by...just the one's he claimed to live by. In reality he was sort of wimp.

"A warrior is a hunter. He calculates everything. That's control. Once his calculations are over, he acts. He lets go. That's abandon. A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

I would like to read more about this. Do you have a source?

I am interested in the ideas, not the author.

It seems important to express how much MORE life can be than chemical reactions, bodily functions, and intellectual gyrations.

There is so much focus here on "overcoming" the effects of being human. I wanted to interject the thought that being alive can be savored.

In reality he was sort of wimp.

That figures. Probably would be driving a big Class A motorhome now as his version of "roughing it".

Sure beats the alternative!  :smirk:
