The link won't work unless external viewers (that's us) are logged in to Yahoo. Try to up the pics directly to the Shroomery.

alright...it took me a minute to figure it out, but here we go... -i have a few contaminated ones though and i'll post those later. i'm pretty sure that it was due to my stupidity and opening the jars WAY before i was supposed to. i was getting worried because they weren't going anywhere. i saw a little gray fuzz and found that i had cobweb in one of em'. i opened the others one by one (but replacing the lids as i went) and 2 more got cobweb. one of those two has a spot of green mold...not too happy about that. i'm a beginner and i know all us newbies make mistakes. theres alawys room for improvement!!! the_buried

Id say you should wait at least a week before birthing. Give it at least 3 days after 100% colonization before birthing. I would also recommend a 24 hour dunk prior to birthing.

i don't think so. i ordered these pre-made cakes from mycomonsters (its a local place)and i don't think they put the verm. layer on top. i'm not too happy about it, but when the time comes to make my OWn cakes, thats what i'm going to do

As far as mycomonsters go, they use crushed oyster shell on top instead of verm. Also, if you got those from them, they should have sent u some breathable filters to put on top between the inner and outer lid. Did u get and follow the dvd they sent you? I am using a kit right now that I got from them. In newb fashion, I used 5cc's per jar, lol. I made a post about it with pics about whether it will work or not.lol. The Golden Teacher strain seems to be ok.

yes and both if you want. As long as its done in a clean matter, it doesnt matter what the cakes are in when you dunk them. Some people put them in thier pc, some put them in bigger jars, some put them in buckets, and some keep them in theyre original jars with something like a bottlecap ontop just to keep them submerged. Making sure they are submerged is all that matters.

My top layer of verm became wet during pressure cooking on some of the jars [I think it's because the rim was dented and allwoed water to get in]. Anyway the loss was huge and I am very upset, but also happy at the same time just because of the expereince and what it ahs taught me. Never rush into things (if you are new/or unprepaired[common sense]). Start small and work your way up. Ohh the muse.

Friendly reminder that Dry vermiculite is used on top of the substrate from supplier you referred to, not crushed oyster shell.

Oh yes, they use verm. Got to say the stuff they use grows some pretty big mofo shrooms. Well at least that's what my friend says.

alright, heres yet another update....
if i were grading my first time growing mushies...i would have to give my first attempt a huge fucking F---i looked at all 6 jars today and they've all been overtaken by shit. out of curiosity, i opened one up and started spooning it down the drain. the entire middle of the jar, from the bottom to the lid, was black instead of the nice brownish tint of healthy cakes. ALL 6 of the jars had it. so, i've decided to throw them all out, sterilize the jars and do it again. i think this is a great hobby and it seems as the mushroom guru's all learned from their mistakes. the way that is see it is this: its been a great learning experience and its time to go at it from another angle. i have everything i need here in my house (except for the spores).
i do have a couple questions regarding a new aproach... -quoted from the brown rice tek i found here Cook the rice according to the instructions on the package except for reducing the water to 1 1/2 cup water to 1 cup grain and leaving out the margarine/salt. Try a bite to see if it's fully cooked and tender. Then fluff and stir the grain, and spoon it into jars until full. Tap the jars to work the grain down. Don't over compact the jars. If it makes a mush in the bottom with hardly any air spaces, you should empty it out and re-fluff with a fork. Leave the usual 1/2" space for the vermiculite in the top. Wipe the top of the jars and add the vermiculite per MMGG. Use your favorite lid arrangement to close the jars and pressure cook for 30 min. at 15 PSI. The grain has already been cooked and if you work quickly, it'll still be quite hot when it goes in the cooker.
here's my first question. i don't have a pressure cooker (and quite frankly, i'm not willing to spend that much money on one!) can i boil the rice jars for a couple hours instead?
here's my other question. can i go out today and make the cakes or is it a better idea to wait until the day my new spores arrive and then do it?
thanks guys... the_buried
