two simple questions

I have two questions-
first, do filter discs accelerate colonization?
second, how thick should i make my colonized substrate layer for a vermiculite casing?

any input would really help

it somewhat helps growth, and you should have 1 inch verm. 1 inch substrate, then 1 inch verm.

Filter disks themself do not speed up colonization. The filter disks provide more air exchange which, in turn, causes faster colonziation.

Substrate level should be at least 2 inches. A 1/2 inch of verm on top.

the top casing layer should be no more than .5"
making the substrate layer thicker (2-4in.) will make for better flushes.

And you may consider skipping the bottom layer altogether. That is where most casing contams usually rear their ugly heads..
