What are your predictions on the fate of Iraq?
    #4546456 - 08/17/05 11:20 AM (18 years, 7 months ago)

What do you think will happen there? Will the U.S. manage to help the Iraqis build a stable democracy? Will the U.S. cut and run before things are stable and after experiencing too many losses? Will a Saddam-like dictator claw his way to power and things will be just like they were?

Seriously, I predict that while democracy will be successfully established, the Iraqis will vote in an a Shiacratic government in anyway. Then maybe a decade down the road, Iraq will have a good old fashioned religious right and a socialist secular left. Give it another 30 years, Iraqis will be arguing over abortion and gay rights.

Nah i dont see that happening. Almost all muslim countries are run by the Sharia. Islamic Law will usually always dictate government in a muslim country even if its secular.

You obviously don't know a thing about governments in the Muslim world, secularism in the Muslim world, and Pan-Arab nationalism.

No it won't. Already Iraqis (ie, the U.S. backed government) wants to bar Israelis from immigrating to the country. Do you think that would ever fly in the states?

I think if we give it time, it will flourish as a democracy. Though a lot of it's infrastructure was destroeyd in the war, it has a relatively educated population and access to oil. There is little reason why it shouldn't prosper.

I think it will turn into viet now. Their fighting for thier god, what are we fighting for? Some fake idea of demcracy that doesn't even exist in our own country. Need to liberate america before we can liberate other countries, which is exactly why iraq will fail. You can't spread democracy when you don't even remember what it is in the 1st place.

You can't compare Iraq to Vietnam. It's been a few years since Iraq was invaded and just under 2,000 U.S. troops have died. In the course of Vietnam, 58,000 troops died. When the Iraq war ends, I doubt the U.S. death toll will surpass 5,000.

It could be argued that medical technology has increased so much that injured soldiers are much more likely to survive now than in the Vietnam era. Therefore, the amount of violence going on in Iraq might be equal to what was going on in Vietnam.

Vietnam was a real war though, with an opposing army.. the opposition in Iraq is a bunch of desert rednecks

You have a guilty conscious or somethin? I didn't compare iraq to viet nam at this moment. This post asked "What are your predictions on the fate of Iraq?"

My prediction was that Iraq will turn into a viet now. "Turn into" meaning in the future, since I thought that's what "prediction" meant.

Granted, there were two enemies in the Vietnam war; the Vietcong and the North Vietnamese. The North Vietnamese were a normal army that did engage in some traditional military maneuvering, but I surmise that the majority of the problems and deaths that the Americans experienced resulted from guerilla warfare.
