New to hunting - when is the best time during the day?
    #4545874 - 08/17/05 09:44 AM (11 years, 3 months ago)

I've heard from a friend that goes mushroom hunting that he looks around in cow fields at around 3 AM - 5 AM and they grow sporadically and are easy to find. I have a hard time staying awake for that long however and last night I had set my alarm for 3 AM and it never turned on and I'm starting to get a little bit pissed. Is there an easier way or earlier time to find them? I've also found some mushrooms recently in a ballpark nearby and I'm not sure if they are hallucinogenic or not. Some are white and some are little brown mushrooms too. I'm not very good at identifying anything and I'm not going to eat them unless I'm absolutely certain. Could someone with experience reply to this or IM me on AIM or MSN? I'd really like to get into mushroom hunting as it seems like a fun hobby with promising reward.

Edit: I live in Michigan, U.S.A.

6am, or sunrise.

the early bird catches the worm, and thats the truth to it. get your ass up, suck it up and get moving! 3-5am is extremely safe as well.

dunno why you'd have to go at 3 am in michigan for... reason being because I am confident that cubes or other dung loving actives grow in michigan. Reason why that matters is that u usually would go to cow fields at 3 am to avoid the farmer and other witnesses.

I would only bother hunting for mushrooms at 2-5 am if safety was a major issue. As I like hunting in remote locations, I choose the time of the day that comforts me best. Usually I start in the morning hours (around 9-10am), but any time during the daylight hours will do.

If I was to go hunting for psychoactive mushrooms in dangerous areas with hostile land owners and/or law enforcement around, I would think twice. But generally I guess early morning hours (2-5 am) are better than those of late night (23 pm - 2 am). I think I'd rather try to find safer hunting grounds though.

Thanks for the tips. Is twelve o' clock too early? Or one? Two sounds more reasonable than three, I don't know why, but it does. I have to work in the mornings so hunting at 9-10 doesn't work out. Maybe I can go on a Saturday, although I'm getting really anxious and don't really want to wait. What was it like for your first time hunting? I get really discouraged when I can't get very good results. It's a bad trait of mine.

First time was last night, found a good cow field but couldn't get past the electric fence. Then the cows all walked up to me and I got sort of freaked out and my friend jumped and scared them away and it made a loud noise so we had to take off. We didn't know how to get around the fence and thanks to fuzzybeaners comment I got freaked out by gun toting farmers lol. I'm going to go around 2 AM next time, we were there at liek 3:30 A.M this time. It takes alot of balls. Anyone know if rain makes shrooms grow more or less?

rain plus high humidity, after a rain in the day and a night of humidity, great.

Find a place to park close to the field and walk to it, or get someone to drop u off at the entrance to the field, dont park near the fence.

next maybe go in the day and look at the electrical fence. depends on the fence but i can leap mine, or crall under it slowely. the shocks not too bad lol. but if its only about 2 feet u can hop. check the field in the day, look for new entrances then attack at night. dont use much light either as the caps will shine, cell phone, in time you will get better

Thanks alot for the help. I just recently found some nice thick woods and I found a really tall mushroom with a flat top that sort of curves up. I picked it but I tossed it because it's huge and I had doubts. I know where it grows though if it is psychedellic. I'm going for a walk later tonight, the place is really close by my house. It's not a farm or anything like that, but the fence looked like if you were very careful you could crawl under but I'd need a stick or something to lift up the wire. I'm going back better prepared with a stick and stuff. The field has a huge light shining on it though and it's right by a house so it makes me way nervous. Thanks alot for the tips, I'll update on what I find.

What are the odds that a farmer would say yes to me going through his farmland for mushrooms in Michigan? Do you think he'd call the cops on me or anything?

i like to go late morning, 7-11 am, but i also dont have to worry about farmers and the like, so i would say if youre worried about getting caught, 2-4 am, if you arent and are going to ask the farmer, then whenever it is nice outside and you are comfortable

Would you be able to see the mushrooms clearly as you drove by?

if the sun was out to dry them up a bit the caps should be easier to see driving by
