Casing Stripes
    #4545794 - 08/17/05 08:25 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Unlike racing stripes for cars, casing stripes actually do add some
horsepower.

Basically I make a regular BRF cake style casing.. but I set the
strongest healthiest cake aside for last. Once the pieces are all
thoroughly crumbled, mixed and smoothed out as a finished substrate
layer, I slice the last cake lengthwise into little sticks about 1cm
thick. I lay these down all across the substrate layer 2cm apart
from each other and the edges. I then apply my casing layer as
normal, with those sticks laying under the casing layer just barely
covered.

I think what happens is that since the strongest cake's genetics are
on top these are the ones from which the fruits will be produced..
giving a more even pinset. Also having them all evenly spaced gives no
overly dense spots and no dead-zones.. just a nice little rows of pins.

Since the sticks are closer to the surface they break through very
quickly.. and overlaying is very difficult to have happen, since 70%
of the surface requires a good 4 extra days to grow through.

If this has already been posted, many apologies.. just something I do
that I find helps a good deal.

Take it easy.

I really dont see that making a difference at all. Once substrate layer completely comes together it's all the same mycellial network. I would definitely prefer a nice even substrate layer to pin over the entire casing than just rows

I know they're just drawings.. but I wanted to illustrate the main differences I notice. I don't know if its because there is less of the casing layer colonized, so it retains more water.. or if its the genetics of the topmost peices pushing through.. all I know is I get much more even pinsets in this way with many fewer aborts.
