Can't get fruits fully matured before turning black on caps
    #4545160 - 08/17/05 03:13 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I was recently told my humidity might be a little low in my FC, so I raised it by misting more frequently. This solved my problem of splitting stems. But one problem still remains: I have to pick the fruits from my 60/40 casing well before they're even matured otherwise the caps start turning black and it appears they are rotting on top. This is occurring before the veil tears away from the stem, that's how young they are.

Is humidity still a problem or could it be something else? It's happened to every single fruit thats been produced from my casing.

I thought splitting stems was due to higher humidity? Also, you sure it's not rotting like that because it's too humid?

Are you fanning regularly?

Well agar told me in another thread to raise humidity levels to alleviate the splitting stems, and it worked great. But still, I can't get the damn things to fully mature without caps turning black and what appears (from touching them) to be rot. I don't think they're rotting because of too high humidity otherwise they would have matured before I raised it the first time. (in my opinion anyway)

Edit: yes fanning a minimum of 3 times a day, sometimes 5+

Is it possible then, that there is not enough moisture in your substrate to provide complete fruit development? That may also have contributed (along with lower humidity) to the splitting stems?

Black rot on caps is a bacterial infection. Sounds like - you are direct misting the fruits, they get soaking wet & bacterial blotch sets in, then rot.

High Rh is one thing, soaking wet - is another.

Thanks for the response agar. I'm using a fine mist spray high above my FC to reduce the chance of large water droplets forming on top of the casing or pins. I guess I need to figure out a way of raising the humidity without having to buy a humidifier so I can eliminate this problem.

<<s it possible then, that there is not enough moisture in your substrate to provide complete fruit development?>>

I was considering this also, but my substrate seems moist enough underneath after I checked it.

Is there anything that can be done once bacterial infection sets in?

If all those infected are picked, can the next flush turn out alright if proper precautions are taken?
