Question about substrate depth

Im an on again off again B+W amateur photographer. I think im going to be able to afford some darkroom time this fall and want to shoot some mushroom ideas. One of my ideas involved taking a flower pot and fruiting mushrooms on it, sort of like a mushroom "plant". Hard to explain but i see it in my head. Im not trying to grow mega shrooms, thats not my goal, rather i just want some fruits coming out regardless of size. Ive read about susbtrate depth being nore more then 4 inches deep, but i cant recall as to why that is.
Soooo, what are the negatives associated with a deep casing layer, if i were to take a medium sized flower pot (like 6 inch tall 5 in wide at mouth of pot) would it work? I know when doing bulk you have a lot of heat issues, is this why deep substrate layers dont work too well?
Any thoughts on this are appreciated, any suggestions for photos or what not will definitely be considered. I see a lot of great images in my mind i wish to capture, but if what im seeking is not possible i need to start looking into other avenues. Hell it might not even work out this fall but it would be great to know when i do get some darkroom time.
Thank you for your help/suggestions.

Heat is a negative, in TMC by Stamets, he recommends not exceeding a depth of 12 inches, but that is for Agaricus, which grows fastest at 77 degrees, Cubes prefer 86, so going deeper than a foot probably won't hurt, but you wouldn't want to run the spawn in a heated chamber.

sillypcybin- to place photos in your posts either use a direct link with the [img]URLGOESHERE[/img] tags, or, click reply and then right underneath the reply box which comes up, click add pics to this post. If you do the second way, you will upload the pic to your pic directory and then copy and paste the link it gives you into the post. Hope this helps!
