If i have dry mushrooms, put them in a ziplock bag and get almost all the air out, and then put it in a little box with a lock on it... how long could they stay potent for?

I'd have to say that as long as you keep the lock on the box then they should last for several months if not longer.

if they're cracker dry and you save them in an airtight container/jar you can save them for over a year (maybe years?)

I have postd on numerous ocassions the analysis of liberty caps from an English herbarium from 1851 with those of some specimens collected in Washington and oregon in 1977 by Gary linbcoff, Bigwood, beaug and ott and the Old English shrooms were as potent as the ones oicked in the us the year before the analysis of them. If they are stored properly and colelcted in a porper manner and then kept from light and heat they will last for hundreds of years.

My own two cents, we bought an ounce that were really strong, we've had them in ziplocked bags in a dark cabinet since last spring. I ate .4g of them once and felt definite effects. Then a couple weeks ago I ate 1g and it sure felt like there was some potency loss. I'm eating 3g this weekend so i'll tell you how it goes, I hope its as crazy as last time

While I agree with MJ that PROPER STORAGE (and all that entails) should preserve them practically forever I also side with Noviseer. I knew somebody that stored some creepers rather well (airtight, dessicant, light-tight). And after about 6-8 months there was a VERY noticable depreciation in potency. In fact, it was apparent that the psilocin was gone but the psilocybin had been retained. I was of the opinion that oxygen absorbers would have preserved the psilocin.

Can you store them in a closet instead of the fridge? Does it make much difference?

unless your closet is >~150F you'd do no better putting them in the fridge.

Psilocybin and psilocin are practically the same chemical besides some organic band around its molecules which makes Psilocybin very stable. When you eat psilocybin it turns INTO psilocin. So your sentence contradicts itself.

From what I have read, some mushrooms have both chemicals in them so it wouldn't be a contradiction.

They'll last for years, but they must be stored in glass. Air permeates plastic over time, so it doesn't matter how good you have them sealed or what chemicals you put in with them, if you're using plastic, you're going to lose out.
I've seen reports of powdered mushrooms packed tightly in glass jars retaining 100% potency after 5 years, and I believe they can last even longer than that.

i pulled out a dry half-pound from the freezer that had been chillin' for 15 years inside plastic bags inside plastic tofu containers. i ate 5g and nothing happened.
so if you store them for 15 years inside plastic containers inside the freezer, evidentally they will lose all of their potency. perhaps glass jars are the solution but i cannot say for sure.
peace.

I am pretty certain that from a chemistry point of view, psilocybin can last longer than me and you. The problem is with storage.
If your cubes are cracker... and im mean CRACKER dry and there stored in an AIR TIGHT/COMPLETE DARKNESS container (glass) keept at room temp. Then you shouldnt have to worry about if their going to last. (i mean who wants to store mushies for years? unless your thinking of making some mega lifetime batch)

A friend picked an immense amount of shrooms last year. Too many for himself and alot of friends to eat in a year(and we really tried).
He dried them to a crisp and zip-locked 'em up squeezing all of the air out. Into the freezer they went and now we're still munching on my friends good fortune.
