A few more questions
    #4543188 - 08/16/05 07:17 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

Well, I called every feed store and health food store in town and I can't feed rye anywhere. I have a 50 pound bag of seed grade rye just sitting around from something else but that's not going to work :frown:. I know rye is supposed to be the best for doing casings, but is there another alternative? Where does WBS stand as far as it's use as a substrate, better than BRF but not as good as rye?

Also, I did 6 LC's recently using a Karo Tek and two of the B+'s came out great but none of the GT's worked. Tonight I plan on starting some dextrose/malt extract LC's to see if they'll work on that but I have a few questions.

1). I read somewhere that I should get the lightest malt extract they have. What I found was extra light malt but I haven't read anything about it's use. It's it as good as light malt?

2). I plan on using quart jars so I'll have enough syringes for when I start my casings. In a quart jar is about 2 tbl spoons (1 each of dextrose and malt extract) the correct amount?

3). When using a quart jar, how many cc's of spores should I use?

4). Do you guys recommend quart jars if I want to do larger amounts of LC, or does it have a lot higher chances of not working or contams, etc?

5). This one is really stoopid. When someone says to PC something for 20 minutes does that mean it's only on the fire for 20 minutes or is that 20 minutes at 15 PSI?

I was PC'ing my LC's for 50 min. 30 min to get to 15 PSI and 20 min at 15 PSI. I don't have a pressure gauge on my PC, so I wait about 20-30 min and do a water droplet test and just time it from there.

WBS seems to be the best IMHO and most others as well, as spawn anyway. If your casing the grain directly then rye is a little better than WBS because it holds moisture better, but if you add about 20% verm to the WBS mix then it will hold moisture well.

Go to walmart - Bird Ration Wild Bird Seed - 4lb bag - 94 cents

Cool, I had gone look at Walmart and didn't know what kind of WBS was good. Thanks a bunch.

Can anyone else help with the liquid culture questions?

get karo... and do 4% karo, 96% water... and a half pint jar will give you enough LC to inoculate hundreds of jars... dont use a quart jar for LC.

20min at 15psi

I've tried Karo syrup and I decided to try dextrose/malt to see if it will give me better results. Anyone know if the extra light malt extract will work? I don't really have the extra pint/half pint jars right now and for some other reasons I only have quart jars. I was planning on splitting the quarts and just using half the jars. How many CC's and tbl spoons of dextrose/malt per quart jar should I use?
